I was a fan of Melissa Broder's poetry (her book "Scarecrone" made me good-miserable for days) before I knew she was behind the So Sad Today twitter account. She has the sort of terrifying power of being able to take the intangible emotional stuff and put it into words without overworking it to the point that it becomes solely about her. Instead, it allows you to connect and feel with her. That's also been the best thing about the twitter account, and why everyone I know follows it.So Sad Today (the book) evokes Melissa's previous work but does so with more humor and, you know, has more words. Having her fill in the gaps a little makes it easier to digest quickly so you can feel "all the feels" right away. So Sad Today's voice is friendly and very current, it's like, how you and your friends talk IRL, and that makes it feel real and personal. It's like your friend confessing a dark feeling they thought only they had and then you both realize you feel the same thing but didn't know you could talk about it.Not to say that everything in this book is super relatable. In one essay, Melissa explains a very specific fetish and how it developed. It's not something I could relate to exactly, but the way she tells the story and expounds on it is so funny that it doesn't feel at all disturbed. Well, a little less disturbed, I guess.While the essays are rooted in sadness and anxiety and feeling alone, the result is something that ends up connecting all (many?) of us in a positive and helpful way. It's not a "self-help" book, but it might help a little.

I am reminded of how everyone we meet is fighting their own personal battles, inner demons and hidden insecurities, no matter how much it appears they may have their act together. Melissa Broder is a brilliant humorist and a keen observer of the human "condition" and commentator on societal norms with a stunning command of the English language. She pulls no punches and writes with astonishing candor.
Deeply personal, Ms Broder holds nothing back in this collection of personal essays. You feel like you have known her from the inside out after reading this. Depression, addiction, open marriage, sex, writing, her most vulnerable secrets and real thoughts... there are times when her destructive mentality and behaviors cause me anxiety, and reminds me of some painful and sad memories. A very emotional read.
This book had me ROFL literally! Author is so witty and funny. It is not for someone who doesn't get dry humor or is afraid of throwup. I talked about this book for a month and gave it to a co worker who is a male in his forties who also loved it! She also has a Twitter account sosadtoday so you can get your daily fix!

Melissa Broder is an intellectual, but also a real woman with whom you can relate to. She describes with precision her problems, and you feel like her problems are yours (in a good way). She is not afraid of being vulnerable, and that is why her voice is so strong... Very recommendable.
i am absolutely in love with the personal essays presented in this book. i’m so amazed at how deep and profound broder went with sharing things that are so private and intimate. broder, which is @sosadtoday on twitter, has been by far one of my favorite twitter accounts for as long as i can remember, so reading a book she wrote felt like a honour that i’ve been waiting forever for and something very much needed. it’s a quick read but i devoured this book inside and out, reading it over and over again multiple times because i couldn’t get enough of it. the essays portraying broder’s depression are perfect and dark, yet the author’s humor brings a warm light to what would be a rather raw and just incredibly f***ing REAL book. i’ve never come across another book or author that describes experiencing these mental illnesses so perfectly and poetically. it’s a breath of fresh air and humongous sigh of relief. finally, someone understands me. and finally, i am not alone.
This book was somehow able to describe the way my brain works, when I thought there was nothing and no one capable of understanding. After reading this you will feel like you know Broder inside and out, but for me that was mostly because I saw myself in each and every one of her essays (well except that one essay). This book will make you laugh out loud, because it is so ridiculously blunt but also so unbelievably real. Reading it feels like you’re having a conversation where someone finally gets it. The most notable element of this book for me was the comfort I felt knowing that there are others with this level of self awareness, and that Broder’s writing is just one representation of the experiences of all those who support her and relate to her. If you’re struggling, in almost any form, this book may give you a clearer understanding of yourself.
Wow. There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. Devastating and hopeful at the same time. I related to so much of it (except that one chapter that kinda freaked me out- you know which one I mean) and couldn't put it down. I am a Melissa Broder follower for life. Serious, succinct, funny, tragic, self-deprecating, tragic, raw and important. I couldn't put it down and read it again as soon as I was finished.

About the Author
Heather Darcy Bhandari is the Director of Exhibitions at Smack Mellon, a nonprofit exhibition and studio space program in Brooklyn, New York. Its mission is to nurture and support emerging, under-recognized mid-career, and women artists in the creation and exhibition of new work. She is also an independent curator, adjunct lecturer at Brown University, and a consultant to several for-profit and nonprofit arts institutions. Heather lectures and participates in portfolio reviews and panel discussions across the country. She is on the board of directors of visual arts at Art Omi (an artist residency in Ghent, New York) and the advisory boards of artfcity (an online, art-related publishing platform) and Trestle Gallery in Brooklyn. She was on the board of NURTUREart for nearly a decade. For the last fifteen years, she was a director of Mixed Greens gallery where she curated over one hundred exhibitions while managing a roster of nearly two-dozen emerging to mid-career artists. Heather received a BA from Brown University and an MFA from Pennsylvania State University. Her career began at contemporary galleries Sonnabend and Lehmann Maupin, both in New York City.Jonathan Melber began his career as an arts-and-entertainment lawyer in New York, representing artists, galleries, collectors and a host of creative individuals and companies. He eventually left his legal practice to join the art e-commerce startup 20x200 as head of business development, later moving to LA to run content acquisition business affairs at Hulu. Today, Jonathan handles monetization strategy and digital licensing for Turner’s entertainment networks. Having purchased the first edition of this book I was impressed by the no nonsense information presented in the book so I was eagerly anticipating the Revised and updated version...so much so that I preordered it. I was particularly interested in the updated sections dealing with social marketing and other online marketing as that was the main thing that would have changed and would have benefited from updating.I wish I had waited. The updates are minimal and as mentioned, the social media and online marketing aspects were hardly touched! This is a major omission in a book about selling art in 2017 and while there were some additions to the first version the skimpy changes do not warrant purchasing this revised edition if you have the first one. You will really not find that much added.If you are buying for the first time then this edition is a good as the original and the added updated material (however minimal it is) makes it a good purchase worth the money.
The focus of this book is not the doing of art but the business of art. If an artist considers his or her output as more than a hobby then the business of art becomes critical. For most artists this means getting work placed in a commercial gallery, something that is not always taught in school. The content of this book, written from the perspective of a gallery owner, is therefore advice worth taking. The tips are pragmatic and based on experience. My only complaint is the design and layout of the book. This is not an aesthetic issue but one of readability. The layout seems to be based on the notion that contemporary readers have a short attention span and are always ready to jump to something new. It also seems to assume that the reader is young with perfect eyesight. Page layout is of two types. Most pages have the narrative text in a column toward the binding with a more narrow outer column made up of quotes from those in the gallery business. This use of the sidebar is a good way to add specific bits of information related to the general narrative. However, for me, this results in a visually cramped page. In addition, the condensed sans serif font is 9 points in the narrative column while the sidebar text is in 7.5 points. This last is just too small for me to read. The information is of real interest so I guess I will get a new prescription for my glasses. The second page design, scattered throughout, places one quote on the page using a large 17 point font. These quotes are no more informative than those in the sidebars. They also have very narrow page margins so that text rolls into the binding gutter. Minor quibbles? Not if the page design makes it difficult to read the book. Plus, a book about the pragmatics of art should be both artful and functional in its own design.
I teach a professional practices course in a BFA program at a State University in Pennsylvania; for several years I've made this book required reading for my professional practices students. By far, it's the most informative, accurate, and well-written I've ever seen on the subject. The authors fully understand the art business, and they understand the problems and challenges of making meaningful art and interfacing with the higher-level business end of things. A former student sent a text to me yesterday as he attended his first MFA class in Professional Development at a well-respected university in New York. He was excited to see that they were using the same book in his grad level class. It didn't surprise me -- I've seen no better resource on the market. I've been involved in the art world for 40+ years as an artist, critic, curator, and professor and this book is without a doubt the current gold standard.
The authors did a great job in providing insights and guidelines for the visual artist who wants to approach the business side of things. After conferring with a handful of MFA friends, they've said that some of these things are not significantly covered in grad school.I fully agree with several other Amazon reviewers about the graphics / layout of the entire book. The design choice (unecessary bold type for the main text, huge margins with narrow sidebars and tiny font)... this all becomes a visual strain.Overall, this book is worthwhile. Hopefully, the authors will do an updated version at some point, and alter their design choices to make this a visually-smoother read.Beyond the usefulness of this book, part of what makes one successful in the art business world goes way beyond the practicalities --- part of it is your personality, your contacts, your willingness to jump through hoops (no matter how you feel), lucky timing, hard work, and your ability to schmooze. Most of the artists I know get their exhibits and from community endeavors, outreach, and just plain old hard work.
I was lucky to be a student of Heather's back in 2012, and we used this excellent book in her class. I went back to my parents' house during a work holiday earlier this year and randomly found it (I don't work in a field even remotely related to art). After skimming through it I was struck how its lessons are highly practical for many other fields, self-employed or not. However, if your interests lie in beginning a career in the visual arts, collecting, or sales, this book is an absolute must-have.
This is a book that I highly recommend if you are just starting out in the art world. I used this book along with "The Artist's Guide to Grant Writing..." which if you buy this book buy them both because they lend support to each other. Good luck.
I'm an emerging artist and this book proved to be really, really useful. Highly recommend. I also bought "The Artist's Guide: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love" but hasn't finished reading it. They are very similar, but ART/WORK is better in my opinion. More interesting to read, more accessible and to the point.

While my (advanced) reading kindergartener "can" read this on his own, we make it a family affair! The Bird & Squirrel books are HILARIOUS! The sound effects in these books are what got my little guy reading in the first place. What kid doesn't want to sound out "BONK!" and "Zooooooooooom!"?? The graphics are bright and appealing, and we find ourselves belly laughing as a family. Thank you for writing a FUN, CLEAN, and well written graphic series for our little guy! Please keep writing! We can't get enough! I know that our son's Bird & Squirrel series will be a set that sits on the shelves in our home (or his) forever. It's what he grabs when riding in the car, sitting at the table eating breakfast, or curled up on the couch. The. Best.
It's my mission in life to be more like Bird! Get it for any kid 4 years old through 5th grade! I find it hilarious as a mom and teacher!!
We've been waiting for a new Bird and Squirrel for a long time and this one was as great as all the others!
{My thoughts} – So much adventure and so many things to be scared about. Red is Squirrel’s wife. We met her in the last book. At the end of the last book we were introduced to their daughter Birdie. Yes, she is named after Bird.Red has to make a delivery that will keep her gone for a couple of days. Squirrel is left home to take care of their daughter. Bird visits and gets Birdie all excited about going on an adventure to find Bigfeet. This is after Squirrel had already told his daughter they were going to stay inside.They do go on an adventure to look for Bigfeet, but they don’t exactly find him or her. They do find all kinds of other things that are fun, but Squirrel is so scared of everything that he attempts to push those fears on everyone around him. It’s one of those interesting concepts when you really think about it. Push the fear on another, get them to believe it and not be afraid of things alone. The only problem is that Bird and Birdie aren’t really afraid of anything.I really liked this book. It showed so many great friendship type things. It also showed the relationship between a father and daughter. The relationship between n uncle and niece. I enjoy when things unravel and a lot has unraveled in this series. I wouldn’t have imagined the author was going to bring it to where it is now, but I absolutely love that he did. This has been a really fun series to read and I hope there will be more books added to it in the future.
