This was the perfect book to take on a recent vacation to Mexico because it was light and entertaining. Uncommon Type contains 17 fiction stories. I'm so curious to know more about what inspired each of these. I guess I'll do some digging. Hanks writes the way you would imagine he would. Each story is evocative and tender. My favorite was the one about the young boy whose parents divorce. He lives with his dad, stepmom, and step siblings. But one day he gets to go home to his mom. The story is told from the vantage point of a child trying to make sense of the world, which still contains good things like apple juice and airplane rides, but it's not the world he once knew. I don't know much about Hank's childhood, but it almost made me believe it was a story about himself.There was one story I couldn't make sense of, but I just skimmed it, and moved on. The title is Stay with Us.The other fun thing is that Hanks is apparently a collector of old typewriters. There is a nod to typewriters in each story. Each chapter has a photograph of a typewriter. About halfway through the book I started wanting one. But then I wondered, "What kind would I get? How would I use it? etc." Fortunately there was a story written to a young woman that answers all those questions. That chapter is called These are the Mediations of My Heard.

Uncommon Find: That is how I would characterize this collection of short stories. Almost everything about this is an anachronism: it celebrates typewriters, it is both entertaining and thought provoking, and it is composed entirely of short stories. Some are more geared towards entertainment and some more geared toward serious commentary on human nature, but all are worthwhile reading. In an age when short stories are an endangered species, here is a collection that deserves the readers full attention. It is best not to race through these as most (but not all) of the stories stimulate thought and reflection because they portray significant aspects of the human experience. What I am saying is that this is real literature,a rare and almost extinct commodity these days. That deeply impresses me. I had grown cynical enough to believe that publishing houses had killed literature; chasing mega-sales of vacuous action-thriller novels or ridiculous fantasies and romance. If I were a high school English teacher I would introduce some of these stories to my class as contemporary examples of the craft so they could get a break from oldies but goodies like O.Henry or Edgar Allen Poe. Mr. Hanks has won a deep respect from me for investing himself in these observations of our world.

Audiobook.....narrated by none other than Tom Hanks himself.I was looking forward to Tom Hanks debut unveiling for months....having pre-paid for the audiobook the ‘second’ I learned Tom Hanks was reading HIS STORIES.I was especially excited to ‘listen’ to Skyline High School celebrity classmate render imagery, illuminate and spotlight juicy details with a wide range of textures - feelings and thoughts. I wanted him to dramatize - flaunt - personify - exemplify all of his greatness.....and for me: he did!I’m not sure I would recommend racing to hear story-after-story-after-story - as I did —a hungry glutton. It’s 10 hours long. I finished it in 2 days....a two day Tom Hank intensive audiothon. I didn’t think I would tire of listening to Tommy Hanks....but I admit.... I did need a few breaks.What stands out the most for me is HOW CREATIVE and BRILLIANT is mind is.I’ve already shared this a few time: A few of the stories I ABSOLUTELY LOVED!.....and even the few I wasn’t as crazy about - they were often the stories I most admired.Hanks utilizes language - plots - characterization- emotions - gadgets - landmarks- history - foods - nature- entertainment- relationships- family - friends - and the vintage typewriter to enhance - enrich his stories.*17* stories is an ambitious undertaking for his first collection-of-fiction. Tom Hanks is as well-qualified to show his writing skills to the world as any other seasoned author....... .....actor, screen writer, director, producer, Hanks has written before. His writings have appeared in ‘The New York Times’, ‘Vanity Fair’, and ‘The New Yorker’.So - he’s not that much of a newbie to the craft.I was laughing hysterically in one of the stories where Anna - LITTLE Ms.BOSSY in“Three Exhausting Weeks” .....keeps her lazy-loafer-boyfriend -running ( literally), doing yoga, stretching, drinking almond milk ( doesn’t he realize milk can kill him), cleaning her yard, painting walls in her apartment, taking scuba diving lessons, - being his jump-to-it-errand boy ... all for the pleasure of good sex.... ( no naps however) —6am shape: time to GET TO WORK! This story is soooooo funny and soooo exhausting! Classic FUNNY!!!“Welcome to Mars”..... where is a different type of story altogether about a surfer who was celebrating his 19th B’day at his favorite beach with his dad.....It’s a heartbreaking breaking story and left a lasting impression with me.“Christmas Eve” .... is a sad story about a World War II veteran....Santa Claus - children - even the tooth fairy....also a lasting gut wrenching story.“Our Town” is FUN.... ( back to laughing again).... in New York City..... Great characters.17 stories in all..... that include families, neighbors, community gatherings, men and women dialogues, starwar curtains, A flea market outing in Alameda, dating wars, dinner in the old spaghetti factory, A woodpecker, flip flops, kids dog piling on their father, ex-boyfriend and ex-husband, margaritas, telescopes, space program stories, a PLASTIC typewriter,.....ha: mini typewriter stories, chili dogs in kennel corn,tunafish sandwich with out lettuce, bowling, a Broadway actress, yummy popsicles......all inspired by punching the typewriter keys: a tribute to THE TYPEWRITER.I’ve heard the mixed reviews already. A full range of ratings are coming out.It was a smiling-joy for me....Tom Hanks got a great start at our old Skykine High School —

Yes, I am a TH fan, but I bought his book because I have enjoyed his storytelling and humor on talk shows and SNL. I am so glad I did. It has been a long time since I enjoyed a book of short stories this much. Every story is different. He has a great eye for charming details that make them almost visible as you read, and a wonderful ear for dialog.Let me say this to possible future readers: Yes, we love that familiar voice and his Everyman persona, but do yourself a favor and get the print version. It is meant to be READ and if you don't you are doing the work a disservice. You can always get the audio version later, if you like.

Reading these stories by Tom Hanks was fun and interesting. Well written, engaging, plucking the heartstrings of America, in a good way. Hanks uses the scenarios he studied as an actor (WWII, Apollo 7, Gump, NYC, etc. etc.) as the settings for many of the stories. He takes time with descriptions...a familiar suburban landscape of decades past; a family Christmas Eve in the 1950's from the viewpoint of a former soldier in the European theatre; a young would-be actress finding her way in New York City. Great stories from a great story-teller. Thanks Tom!

This would be a great book for those are unfamiliar with Oracle RAC, Data Guard, and Flashback.For those who are already familiar, it would be a rehash of the basics and intermediate knowledge.If you are looking for cutting edge practices and architecture involving Oracle RAC and Data Guard, you would be disappointed. For example, Oracle RAC has a component called Cache Fusion (or whatever they call it now) which coordinates locking and data caches across 3 nodes. The book never dives into this and why having more than 3 nodes in RAC could sometimes be counterproductive.The same could be applied to Data Guard. Just how does the redo apply (physical standby) work? How is that so much different from SQL apply (logical standby)? How fast is redo apply during Fast Sync especially for large transactions? How well does Oracle Dataguard function in a Synchronous (two-phase commit) Maximum Availability mode? What are some of the pitfalls, risks, and drawbacks? From what I can tell, the answers to these types of more advanced questions were lacking.Still, this book provides a very solid foundation for Oracle RAC, Dataguard, and Flashback.Pros:1)Highly recommended for those who are getting into Oracle.2)Highly recommended for those who are trying to refresh their knowledge of Oracle RAC, Data Guard, and Flashback or trying to upgrade their knowledge from 10g.3)Good and useful instructions on installation of Oracle RAC and Data Guard.Cons:1)Doesn't get into too much details into the working of Oracle RAC, Data Guard, and Flashback.

Simple:- it covers a lot of very important big topics- it gives a long-running hands-on lab as an example- it is written well- it gives advice and justifications for its take on 'best practices'Each topic is complicated. No, the book does not cover every part of every topic. But it gives a great overview and makes the DBA pro wanting more.Great job guys - send me the next manuscript update and I will tech review it for you (smile).

This book covers almost all aspects of Oracle 11g HA capabilities explaining RAC , Dataguard and Grid control. I would recommend this book for Dba's,IT Managers and IT Architect.

This book should not have 11g in the title. It is an Oracle book not an 11g book. I was very disappointed.

I read this book purely for pleasure. Within my interests lies history, yet it is not a subject I have delved deeply into at any point in my life. This truly marked my first major personal attempt into learning more about history.I am glad this book was my first read into the past. The adventure that Columbus underwent and all the surrounding interactions he had in his world are so eloquently presented by the author. I highlighted countless words which I had never come across before. The vocabulary in this book is exceptional and can further anyone who wishes to improve it.I recommend this book to all I know. It's just as exciting to read as any popular video entertainment today. Get yourself 1/4 the way into this book and you will carry yourself to finish the epic journey.

Christopher Columbus has always interested me. Martin Dugard's book is written with the flair of a novel, but provides tremendous insight into the flawed genius of Christopher Columbus. I had little idea the magnitude of what he accomplished beyond his first voyage. One of the more interesting revelations of the book is when Mr. Dugard writes that Columbus, in his westward search for the orient, knew of the narrow isthmus of Panama and the great ocean (Pacific) beyond; he just had no means of exploring it.I highly recommend this book and others written by Martin Dugard. He has become an author I seek out.

It seems the stories of early exploration are at once both tragic and triumphant. Tragic in that they relate man's inhumanity to man. Triumphant in that they express the the ability of man to face and conquer the most adverse conditions of body and spirit. This book is a very impressive history of the four voyages of Columbus. Who knew such a story existed? Our school history books only drilled into us the 1492 story of the first voyage. One must read these exploration stories without judgement. For we cannot enter into the the historic psyche of the parties involved. We cannot judge the parties by our current sensibilities. In any case, Martin Dugard did a masterful job of bringing to the reader the awesome story of these early seafaring explorers, the sailing mastery of Columbus along with his human weaknesses, and a broad perspective of the world political scene that motivated the entire story. Excellent!Note: My Kindle version did not contain maps which would have been amazingly useful and added much to the story. I do not know if the print version has such maps.

What I like about Martin Dugard' s writing, is that he fills every page with interesting and well-researched information. I always come out with tons of new facts when I read his books. The other great thing is that his books move quickly with no dead spaces you have to wade through. This book is a prime example.I loved this book, and I learned amazing things about a complex man and his time in history. This is a book that everyone should read, and should be part of any history curriculum. Don't hesitate. Add it to your library.

I gained an appreciation for Columbus that I did not have before reading this book. His name usually evoked contempt and anger over the treatment of the natives of the lands Columbus visited or attempted to settle. I had no idea he was treated so badly by many of the Spaniards. This historical account of his fourth voyage was plagued with just about every misfortune imaginable, from a Sailor's perspective. It was a year-long nightmare of tragic events.I highly recommend the book. It's told using first-hand accounts using journal entries and other factual records.

Dugard is a fantastic writer. Although the beginning of the book begins slowly, the tale of the fourth voyage is one of the most thrilling adventures I ever read. The fact that this was a true story and not fiction makes the reader hold onto their armchair as Dugard's narrative reads beautifully and steers the reader along, and it does so as masterfully as the great Columbus himself, who tenaciously led his frightened men to the New World. And despite Columbus' later misfortunes during this fourth voyage, he was an extremely clever man with outstanding resolve that although never found that elusive passage to Asia did manage to return home safely after a nerve-racking series of disasters. That is astounding by any mortal's standards.I was glad to see that the History Channel made a movie on Dugard's book, as it is a crucial piece of history and an amazing story. Despite Columbus' failed mission he led his crew through, while even being deathly sick, to finally being rescued. That so many men did follow him, regardless of the mutiny, which was understandable at that crisis, it seems the main issue many others and I have is about Columbus being a tyrant. This whole issue truly needs factual evidence to prove that it was Columbus rather than his officers who committed those gross misdeeds on Hispaniola that tarnished Columbus' name, honor and right to govern.In comparison to King Ferdinand's Spain, which was entering its most ugly period of pogroms by first expelling the Muslims and currently on a mission to begin the Inquisition, Columbus appears to have been an angel. If harsh punishments were meted out on Hispaniola, it seems the evil King Ferdinand, who was killing people in mass, was no one to reprimand Columbus or his men for harsh treatment. Many factors indicate that the King's aim was to demote Columbus and his monopoly on the New World, which he and his evil bishop, Fonseca, managed to do. They were ruthlessly expelling Muslims and Jews, and Columbus was just another expendable victim added to the list. Hence, this vital information needs to be finally resolved by ALL historians writing about Columbus.However, this book is titled "The Last Voyage of Columbus", so I can't criticize Dugard too much in this regard, yet his storyline does address this previous issue, and therefore should to some extent. But as for the tantalizing fourth voyage, this is nothing short of extraordinary and almost too unreal to believe.This was a fascinating tale, written in a fascinating and engaging style. Bravo Dugard! And thanks for bequeathing to the world this great and important tale. A MUST READ!
