Louise DeSalvo (1942-2018) was the multi-award-winning author of such memoirs as Vertigo, Breathless, and Crazy in the Kitchen: Food, Feuds and Forgiveness in an Italian American Family. She was also a renowned feminist scholar and essayist who wrote about such literary figures as D. H. Lawrence, Henry Miller, and Virginia Woolf. Her book Virginia Woolf: The Impact of Childhood Sexual Abuse on Her Life and Work was named one of the most important books of the twentieth century by the Women’s Review of Books.A professor of English, Louise taught creative writing and literature at Hunter College where she implemented the school’s MFA in Memoir program, and she wrote several books on creative writing including Writing as a Way of Healing: How Telling Our Stories Transforms Our Lives and The Art of Slow Writing: Reflections on Times, Craft, and Creativity.

Oh, my! I borrowed this book from the library and have alternated between guzzling it and making my self read only one chapter a night, after work and before sleep. It is such a fine book, with so much good meat and helpful references to the work of others, and the premise--that writing/working slowly is an art, not something for writers to beat themselves up over--is like a refreshing draught of water in this time of instant this and how to do more in less time. I have not yet finished reading--am only on page 278--but I *must* have a copy of my own to read and reread and refer to and savor as I work. If I had the financial wherewithal I would buy copies for all of my friends who write. Thank you, Louise Salvo! (How I wish I could be a student in one of your memoir classes, but this book will be the next best thing.)
In short, conversational chapters, author and writing coach Louise DeSalvo offers comfort and inspiration to writers at any stage of development. As a beginning memoirist, I savored the detailed description of the hidden struggles and triumphs of authors like Virginia Woolf, Anne Tyler, and Ian McEwan as they navigate the writing life. Her practical, personal examples include the gamut of genres she has mastered: memoir, fiction, and writing guidebooks.This book felt like a handbook to me. My copy of the work is dog-eared and underlined. The fly-leaf features notes with page numbers of passages I found especially useful. She even suggests a flexible formula for the beginning writer on page 240: ABDCE. Curious? Buy the book!DeSalvo never confuses "slow" with "uninspired" or "careless." Rather she distills the wisdom of her long experience as she examines the patience and endurance required in the writing process. Her meditative approach to writing along with advice I can use earns this book a 5-star review, one I seldom accord any book, particularly one on writing.
I am a new reader of this author, and a huge fan now. This book spoke to me at a critical time, when I wanted to heave my nearly completed ms out the window! The advice, the calming nature of her style, her anecdotes...this is therapy/mentoring/friendship/and sage writing tips all rolled into one. Every writer, no matter what stage, should have this book nearby.
There are many helpful resources out there about writing style and composition, but this book explores and affirms the value of deadends, frustrations and roadblocks as opportunities for discovering one's own authentic voice and message
I think I came across this book on Facebook. It is an incredible gift. The writing is lovely and superbly paced and the content is without compare. As a guide to the creative life, it is without comparison. Those lucky enough to have Ms. DeSalvo as writing professor are lucky indeed.
This is the kind of book that instantly dissolves any writer's guilt about writing slowly. Providing many, many examples of well-known authors and their process, you soon learn that your process is quite similar to theirs. It's also entertaining for those who love to read about writing and how it's accomplished.
Louise offers a voice of sanity, not just for the writer, but for any human being trying to live well, fully, deeply. Her suggestions and recommendations, if followed, will lead to a life lived with meaning, and to writing of substance.
Using examples from well-known authors, DeSalvo gives a spirited defense of writing as an art form that requires a long and rigorous apprenticeship. Her message couldn't have come at a better time. It is far too easy now to push writing into the public arena without giving enough care and attention to the skills a writer needs to make his writing the best it can be.

With visits to Miami, Venice, New York and New Jersey, Alaska, and Greenland, Goodell will show you how even a small rise leaves people walking the neighborhood in wading boots. For island nations it will be even worse, of course. Then he’ll scare you with more realistic forecasts – six, eight, or ten feet in Miami. Or maybe twenty in New York? Imagine what all that does to a ten or twenty foot storm surge.This fast-paced, well-written book will have you selling your real estate in no time at all.
Brilliant. Terrifying. Makes me very glad that I'm in my 60s and won't have to witness this slow-motion disaster unfold. Also very glad I didn't have children, who will have to deal with the mess we leave behind. I can't imagine what's going to happen when billions of people are displaced by rising sea levels - the refugee crisis will be staggering, and it doesn't look like anybody will be willing to take them (based on how the world responded to the first climate-caused refugee crisis: Syria). God hep us all.
A good, balanced read on a touchy subject. My biggest take-way? Besides the two groups of climate change advocates and deniers, there is a third group of people who believe full well that sea levels are rising but will never admit it in public. These are the people with either a large stake in low-lying beach-front real estate developments in the 50 - 100 year path of sea level rise or a stake in the fossil fuel industry that may be a contributing cause. The real estate magnates are quietly planning to sell assets that are in the path before evidence of rates of sea level rise become stronger and property values begin to plummet, Keep in mind that the threatened coastal real estate will start losing its value as soon as extrapolated sea level rise rates put them at risk in 50 to 100 years, and not when the water is lapping at their porches. That process of quietly divesting has already started. And the economic impact will be huge when the scramble away from the coasts begins in earnest.
The USA, it seems, is the last bastion of climate change deniers. There is the whole rest of the world, and there are Fox News viewers. In North Carolina, it is illegal claim the sea level is rising. The CIA’s Center on Climate Change and National Security simply disappeared when a Congressman discovered it. Congress will pounce and remove any reference to climate presented to it or which it stumbles upon. The president – well, you know.Jeff Goodell has traveled the world looking at the ways people and nations are preparing for sea level rise. Because it is well underway, and painfully so. He has examined Venice, Rotterdam, the Marshall Islands and also New York City, the Jersey Shore, Florida, and Norfolk, where the biggest American naval base is going under, visibly. The differences in approach are astounding. While the rest of the world is making huge changes or planning for escape, Americans are hunkering down. They won’t change, come hell or high water. A lot of them expect a technological miracle to come along before it’s too late. So they’re just standing by.Globally, 145 million people live less than three feet above sea level, “creating generations of climate refugees who will make today’s Syrian war refugee crisis look like a high school drama class production“, Goodell says. Interestingly, climate refugee has no meaning, particularly to governments. It is not defined. No law references it. It does not exist. Just the refugees – an expected 200 million of them by 2050.Goodell says if all seven billion of us jumped in the ocean, the water would rise about 1/100 of an inch. If all the snow in Greenland melts, the oceans will rise 22 feet. And that’s just Greenland. The business of sea levels rising by six inches over the next 80 years is laughable to scientists. They’re looking at 55 feet.The cognitive dissonance is gigantic. There are insane conversations about raising buildings and roads, or flood insurance and dunes, as if they could make Florida livable when it’s under (salt) water. With no farms, no streets, airports or ports, there will be no food, water or electricity and no way to live, no matter how much insurance you have or how high the building is off the (former) ground. Saving a condo tower does not mean Miami will be viable. But Miami is booming, and the buildings are going up without any changes from previous designs. No laws require taking flooding into account. Developers sell their projects before they break ground, leaving the condos to greater fools. Rather than cause a panic and tell builders they can’t, America provides heavily subsidized flood insurance, encouraging them to do more. The rich sue their local governments to rebuild irrational roads that wash away nearly every year. The poor are simply cut off from services. It is Swiftian madness.Goodell reports it all matter-of-factly. He has attended the conferences, met with the scientists for really in-depth conversations, and even interviewed President Obama for an hour, alone, when they were in Alaska a year ago. (He was the first sitting president to visit, and it was about moving whole communities inland.)
