With its refined cover, silver gilded pages, a greater number of pages, and more variety, it is "Beaches" grown-up sister.Every bit as colorful, it's even more breathtaking. Shots are mostly scenic, with some lifestyle ones interspersed. If, like I, you are strictly a beach person, don't be put off: Surf, Pool (my fave! A throwback to Esther Williams days), Sand, and Isles comprise at least half the book — but I still enjoyed viewing the rest.

Just received this today and its beautiful and a great addition to my coffee table (will be joining the book "Beaches")

What a treat to have found this book while browsing for interior design books to place on a foyer console table! The front cover immediately sucked me in because I love photography such as this. Although incorrect, I like to call such photos the “little person” photo where the people are small against a beautiful, vast backdrop. I can’t wait to place this on my coffee table so friends and family can browse through its pages. Gray Malin’s words in the book are few from what I’ve gathered since page 92, but so well written. Short and sweet is what I appreciate. The book is also beautiful and substantial.

This is a gorgeous, dream inspiring book. The perfect dull, winter day escape. Malin captures his subjects in such a simple, but mesmerizing way that you’re completely captivated. I could stare at these pages for hours.

Awesome book, but slightly damaged on one corner. We decided it wasn't worth the hassle to return.

Its a great book and the photos are very lovely.

Beautiful coffee table book!

Much encouraged by my purchase of Vol1, I decided to collect the others in the same series. Here's the amazon link to Vol1 I am referring to:http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Tintin-America-Pharaoh-Complete/dp/0316359408/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304314437&sr=8-1This one and other volumes of the same series are very different from Vol1.Vol1 is printed in Spain, the others including this one is printed in China. This is not a factor that would discourage me alone and I only found this after I was surprised by the differences below.Vol1 is bigger in both height and width than Vol2, about 0.5 inches at least. The pictures is Vol1 one are bigger, the font is bigger and bolder which makes all the difference. The size of the Vol2 (and the rest in the series) although small by just a little makes all the difference between just small and unreadable small. I just could not concentrate on the tiny pictures and the font on this one. Its like going down on the eye chart, one small size you can read alright and the next smaller one you can't make out.Returning these and will probably return the first vol too as now I can't complete the set. There is a lot of conflicting reviews on these series regarding the size and I will not be surprised if at some point different prints were shipped and is the basis for at least some of the confusions if not all.My advice if you haven't bought it don't !!

In a small format - Three of those old large paperback Tin Tin books condensed in one small book- waste of paper - can’t see the illustrations well or read the text -

Volume Two of the Adventures of Tintin continues the collected stories of Belgian artist and storyteller Herge about his cartoon hero, the young reporter Tintin. Herge produced Tintin adventures in the form of early graphic novels from the late 1920's until the mid-1970's. His stories have held up astonishingly and retain a huge fan base to this day.In "The Broken Ear", Tintin tracks a stolen South American fetish to the cartoonishly coup-torn Latin American Republic of San Theodoros, himself shadowed by two bumbling but dangerous criminals. The storyline presents one cliff-hanger after another for the fearless Tintin, while veering in presentation from high adventure to low farce. Herge hadn't quite mastered his story-telling style in this early adventure; Tintin is a distinctly younger version of the high-minded, mature adventurer he will become. Nevertheless, fans will find the story quite entertaining. In "The Black Isle", Herge and his cartoon hero Tintin hit their stride in terms of artwork and meticulously plotted storylines. Tintin pursues a gang of dangerous counterfeiters to the Scottish Highlands, ultimately to their lair on a remote island. The sequence in Scotland includes lots of Scottish dialect, men in kilts, and an encounter in a half-ruined castle with a real monster. Tintin is assisted, more or less, by the two bumbling detectives Thompson and Thomson."King Ottokar's Sceptre" takes Tintin to the fictional Balkan country of Syldavia, where he stumbles onto a plot to dispose the rightful king. The storyline centers around the mysterious disappearance from a guarded castle of a priceless relic. Tintin must race the clock to recover the relic and prevent the coup, assisted by the Thompson twins.Herge's simple yet wonderfully detailed artwork and carefully plotted storylines are still entertaining and very highly recommended to Tintin fans of all ages.

The book pictures and print are too small to read. Had a difficult time reading the words. The other Tin Tin volumes (large book) are better than this book as the pictures and words are easy to see and read. This book that I ordered was too small. It should be big like the other volumes.

great book. Good Grammar. good diction. A child can widen her vocabulary by reading these books. They are sensible. They carry great and intelligent plots. contain humour and suspense and is good literature for kids and adults alike

This is a sturdy, colorful collection of several TinTin volumes, and my 8-year-old grandson loves it. The images and type are a bit small for Grandma's eyes, but he'll do fine. A bonus for our family was that this one ends with TinTin sailing pre-WWII on the Queen Mary, which is permanently housed in our city of Long Beach. It's been a great way to acquaint him with an earlier era.

"OMG ...I LOVE IT!" these are the words of my daughter. She loves TinTin adventures and spends hours reading this book. Her only disappointment...she does not like it when Snowy gets hurt. Will be buying her more.

Love the story since I was a child. Recently bought this for my 6yr old. He loves the stories and have been reading them non stop. However, I took one star off because the text is small. I prefer the softcover version; the text is bigger and much easier on the eye.

This is the 10th anniversary edition that I'm reviewing, which means that there should be 10 years worth of reviews already, and anyone who is a Neil Gaiman fan will have already read it.That said, here goes: it an old idea that you've seen before in a couple of Star Trek episodes and who knows elsewhere: the Greek gods or some other gods (in this case, pretty much all gods, in any pantheon that ever existed) are (or were) real! They derive their power from being worshiped, and only die if they are forgotten. The twist: believers bring their gods with them when they emigrate. We have old world gods in the new world. New gods don't get along with the old ones, and a conflict ensues. We follow one individual, Shadow, who isn't himself a god, but who might be employed by one, on journeys to various odd locations in the U.S. which are focal points of power. Not knowing much lore, he nevertheless has to do his best to fulfill his employer's missions, feeling his way through potential dangers and political intrigue.

Right up front I should admit, I'd never heard of Neil Gaiman before I read an enthusiastic newspaper review about this book and decided to preorder it a few days ago. Last night, it was wirelessly delivered to my Kindle and this morning, I picked it up and started reading. Almost instantly, I was so absorbed and lost in the storytelling experience that I didn't do anything else until I finished it a few hours later. It's a short book; it's enchanting; it's very well written...definitely top-quality fantasy literature. I'm not a fan of fantasy literature, but this book swept me away into such a delightful and fascinating series of incredible adventures--or should I say misadventures--that I could not pull myself away. The author is correct to warn that this is not a fable for children...the reality is far too stark and dark, and there are definitely some adult themes. "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" is a tale about a lonely bookish seven-year old whose life takes a terrifying turn into a dark and creepy reality. The child is never named, but in recent interviews, the author admits that this child is very much like he was at that age. The child lives in the lovely English countryside of Sussex--the same environment where the author grew up. And like Gaiman, the child is wise, responsible, and moral beyond his years. The parents are blithely confident that nothing bad could happen to their brilliant bookish son in such a bucolic setting. But of course, bad things can, and do happen, especially to the pure and innocent...The parents have no idea that the Hempstocks--an eleven-year-old girl, her mother, and grandmother--who live by a pond at the end of the lane, are really a group of immortals who play at being human. Our seven-year-old child makes friends with the girl, Lettie Hempstock, and she introduces him to the pond, which is really an ocean. Eventually, our narrator and Lettie take a trip into a higher plain of reality that is entered somehow through the property owned by the Hempstocks, and so begins a series of remarkable misadventures with unforeseen consequences. This novel is a heroic tale about the age-old battle between childhood innocence and mythic forces. The book will charm you, fill you with awe, make you feel on edge, surprise you, and make you want to keep on reading no mater what important obligations you might have waiting for you to accomplish.Since finishing the book this afternoon, I was so curious about this fine writer that I started doing research into his life, philosophy, and writing. It seems that in prepublication interviews, Gaiman says that he's prouder of this particular work than anything else he's ever written...and, as I learned today, this is an author who has had an insanely prolific career spanning blockbuster successes across a large number of different creative media. He says he's put an enormous amount of effort into writing and rewriting this book in order to get the tone, words, and dramatic focus just right. A number of critics have already said they consider this work to be as close to sterling literary fiction as Gaiman is ever likely to get.Indeed, I was very impressed. For me, this work is, without doubt, first-rate fantasy and escapist fiction...and very fine literature, as well. It delivers a highly imaginative, fabulous and fascinating fable that envelops, and attempts to explain, everything in the space-time continuum. Yes, it's that ambitious! It had me hooked from the first to the last page. Simply put: it is an incredible gem of a novel.

As the title of this review clearly states, I saw the TV series before I read this book, in fact I did not know this book existed and I was quite certain that it would not be a book I would enjoy reading, after all, the series revealed all the secrets.Well I was wrong this book is full of highways and byways, I touched in the series treatment and in fact has more depth than those eight epidodes could ever dream of and although it never got to the end of the book, in fact it did not even make it to the House on the Rock, the series was an excellent way for me to pick up something that I should have read years ago.The characters all fully drawn, the plot is well paced and the author is true to his premise throughout, which for me anyhow make this a five star book. When archetypes are needed they are used and used with a deliciously ironic effect. This is the sort of book I could put down and come back to, until of course I received the final chapters. Although the ending is foreshadowed more than once, and I will not spoil any else's enjoyment of this book by pointing it out, I was caught up in the narrative that I could not suspend my disbelief for long enough to puzzle it out. Although I look forward to another season of American Gods, knowing what I know now, will certainly allow me to cast a more critical eye on the transformation of this delightful adventure to the small screen, and I expect great things from the screen writers as they weave the rest of this tale into their streaming video offering.

Interesting at the beginning but within first fifty pages I got lost, didn't know which direction the story was going. The novel has some interesting chapters scattered in between the main story but I got disappointed that they turned out to be independent stories with no connection to the main story. Some of the description of the so called gods, their clothing, their looks and the dietary habits was nauseating. Because of so many rave reviews I completed the novel and the question that I had in my mind 'what's the point?' remained unanswered.

Dear, dear how I've loved this book. After a long hiatus from reading novels, I picked this one up on the basis of others' reviews. It was everything that I could have asked for in a fantasy novel: a diverse set of compelling characters, a sense of mystery and doom, emotional connection, a sense of history intertwining with the present. Clearly a modern classic and, though it is set in America, a work that plays with the idea of interweaving history, fantasy, and action in a way that is reminiscent of the the classics of the fantasy genre. A beautiful book and a world and vision that I hope Gaiman continues to explore for years to come.

My eating lifestyle Bible!I swear by it!Try it, and you'll become one of these people whose sh*t won't stink; literally! No joke! You'll also be one of those people whose skin, hair and nails are radiant. No bloating, no stomach issues, no acid reflux, no constipation, no gassiness, no digestive problems.Just good food combined properly for maximum effect. This book came into my life via a dear friend more than a decade ago, and it is by far the book that has impacted my life the most.I have, am, and will continue to recommend it to anyone who approaches me complaining of any eating issues, or disorders. Those who have read and tried the suggested eating patterns in this book, have been grateful to have come across it.If I could give it 100 stars, I would; but alas, five is the most I can give, and so I have.

Many years ago I followed this eating plan and was very successful with losing weight. I purchased the newer edition because it had additional information that my older one did not and I am using it this time around for health reasons. In the month I have used the eating plan I have lost weight, feel more clear headed and energetic. Also, I just got my labs back and for the first time since last using this plan(15 yrs ago) my cholesterol panel is all normal! This can be a tough plan to follow in the beginning, so as the book says take it a step at a time and don't try to do everything it states on day one. Pick the things in the plan you can do and continue adding more as you are comfortable. The more you do, the more results you will have. I know I have had great results by following as much as I could and each day finding I could do a little more. I found it was best to completely read the book through before starting the plan, this way you will have understanding of why you need to eat the way they state.

Read the original Fit For Life back in the 80's. Couldn't find my copy so when looking the book up, saw this updated version and decided to purchase. Was disappointed and have gone ahead and ordered the original. Alot of fluff and no recipes. Wasn't as impactful as the original book.

I read his original Fit For Life book back in the 90s and tried his recommended way of eating. It worked for me very well. Years later, I thought about it again and decided to purchase the book again, saw this version and thought I’d buy it instead. Big mistake! The author rambles on and on for probably over 90% of the book about nonsense and practically says his way of eating will cure cancer. I was VERY disappointed in the purchase. If you want information on food combing as a way of eating, there are plenty of websites out there that give you the same information, without all the nonsense and rambling, and it’s free. Don’t waste your money! If I could’ve given this zero stars I would have.

This is the only book that I have ever bought that I can follow and actually lose weight on. The principles in this book are simple to follow. I brought this book when I was out of college (many moons ago) and lost weight. I was actually losing so much weight (plus running about 4 x's a week). You can have whatever you feel like eating, there are no restrictions - AT ALL. I stayed at a size 8 for years. Now almost 30 years later I'm at a size 12 and retired. I am now ready again to be FIT FOR LIFE! IT WORKS!

His explanations about how to combine foods has lessened my problems with gastroparesis.

Principles herein can't be more contrary to today's conventional meal but which, if adhered to, brings great rewards for those who suffer frequent indigestion.Spoken from personal experience as well as hvg witnessed a business associate get healthy over an 18mth project. The book theorises that the body undergoes 3 major phases of food processing through a 24hour day. Phase 1 - Eating & Digestion (12noon-8pm); Phase 2 - Absorption (8pm-4am); and Phase 3 - Excretion (4am-12noon).The author categorizes food into 3 categories: 1) carbohydate, 2) protein and 3) vegetables and advocates that food be consumed in compatible category combinations that would result in optimal digestion. For example, it maintains that proteins and carbohydrates should never be consumed together as the enzymes secreted to digest the respective classes tended to cancel out each other's digestive powers, neutralising the acidity/ alkalinity of the enzymes. As a result of which slows digestion, lengthening the time poorly digested food spends in the stomach. Nutrient absorption is impaired, and food would end up sitting in the digestive tract longer than it should, exposing it to a higher incidence of putrefication whenever it encounters sugary substances (desserts after a meal is a bad idea). This contributes to rapid putrefication - imagine foul odious sludge & gas sitting in one's intestines, going no where and the resulting emissions!. Rather - the aim is to maximise digestion and absorption and waste material expelled in the shortest possible time.RATHER than carbs as the common food staple, theory advocates treating vegetables as the staple (common food) to be taken together with proteins and then separately in a different meal with carbs. Importantly, Diamond advocates that fruits be consumed on an empty stomach, best for breakfast in any amount till satisfied up till noon. The rationale here is to avoid diverting fresh energy from the previous night's good sleep to digesting a heavy meal, preferring rather to channel the available energy to the day's morning pursuits. Simple carbs from fruits are in absorbable form and provides the required energy for the cleansing (waste mgmt) cycle in the morning - when excretion best take place. A logical deduction from here then is for carbs & vegetables to be eaten at lunch - hence allowing the energy it generates to be used through the afternoon (rather than stored overnight). Proteins & vegetables otoh, is best consumed at night to resource muscle repair & recovery after the day's pursuits. This overall eating formula aims to promote digestive health as well as aid effective weight loss - and it works! Caution though that what works for one may not work or be redundant for another. Hence listen to your own body. It's a gem for me.

I gave away my original book over a decade ago, and wanting to rekindle the great health and energy I had back then, I bought this more recent printing. Some of the information and opinions are extreme and should be taken with a grain of salt, but when I followed the diet strictly, I lost 3 lbs a week without any effort (other than eating tons of fruit and farm fresh veggies). This time I'm looking forward to trying more of the recipes and am psyched to revisit this great book.

Nothing I'm going to say should deter you from choosing to read Drums of Autumn, the fourth book in the Outlander series. However, because Amazon tends to want readers to review, I am going to mention some elements of this book that gave me pause and kept it from being perfect. Overall, the book is as well written, researched and detailed as the previous three and worth the time I invested it it, but for me this one is not as thrilling and at times, felt ponderous. I plan to read the fifth book, but I am approaching it with the trepidatious fear of a decline in the overall quality of the series.******************************************************SPOILERS**********************************************************This book centers on the relationship between Claire's and Jamies' daughter, Brianna and Roger McKenzie Wakefield a historian and friend to Claire and Bree. They are two throughly modern young people in their early to late 20s. Both time travel to the mid-18th Century, Bree in search of her mother and father, Roger in search of Bree. I found it easier to accept Claire's initial time travel and subsequent return because both her generational upbringing ( England in the 20s and 30s) and her marriage to a scholarly historian would give her just a bit if a leg up on making the transition. Bree, on the other hand is a child of the 50s and 60s. She's been brought up in America and retains her fairly modern speech patterns and many of the idioms. Those idiosyncrasies don't seem to cause much if a stir among the strangers that she meets. It's not a huge thing, but it did notice it.My second and somewhat larger complaint lay in Bree's Olympic quality conclusion jumping. She and Roger become married by hand fasting and consummate their relationship. Two days later she is raped by a pirate. Upon finding herself pregnant she is immediately convinced that it is the child of the pirate. Much of the relationship angst between her and Roger revolves around that assumption. I found it a bit drawn out and contrived, but then many of Bree's actions and attitudes fell into that category for me. Bottom line, I found Bree to be impulsive, headstrong and a bit of a pain in the backside. The best thing Ms. Galbadon does is to write characters who are very, very human. In other words, flawed. I am giving Ms. Galbadon the benefit of the doubt that that was her thinking behind the writing of Bree's character. My last concern centers on a scene with Claire as she performs inguinal hernia surgery on a man in the midst of a dinner party. Even in the barbaric American colonies, a woman performing surgery in the region of a man's testicles in the midst of a dinner party strains credulity. The fact that this surgery was witnessed almost without comment by the dinner guests breaks it completely. It was a well written scene, but I just couldn't "buy it."I've enjoyed these books up to this point. Fingers crossed that the author's imagination doesn't stray too far in to the realm of incredulity in the next books.

I never thought I'd be the kind of person who would get swept up in a series of thousand-page epic fantasy adventure book, but here I am having finished book #4, mad that I have to wait a couple of days until the next installment arrives in the mail. I spoiled myself a little for Drums of Autumn, not so much on its contents, but I became aware that many fans consider this to be one of their least favorites, and one of the slowest of the books. So I went into it with a bit of a bias that I have to say was happily proven incorrect. For me, this book almost lived up to Voyager, and was miles above Dragonfly in Amber. Not going to lie, for me one of my favorite elements of the series will always be the Highlands, and I'm still disappointed we didn't get more time there. I assumed I didn't love DiA as much as the others because the setting moved from Scotland to France. But that wasn't it, because the move to the American colonies I had been dreading wound up working well. I think what went wrong with DiA was the remake of Jamie into kind of a dandy, trying to fit in with the silly French noble class. Jamie just doesn't make sense to me as a character outside of a rugged setting with a battle to fight. I worried I wouldn't enjoy the expanding cast of characters, or the shift in focus outside the Jamie/Claire dynamic, but it wasn't as clumsy as I'd feared. That said, I like both Brianna and Roger a little less after this book. In large doses, they are both super annoying. But I could read about Ian (and Rollo!) and Lord John all day.I didn't think the plot was slow. In fact, it gets a little old for me when Jamie and Claire have to escape death every 20 pages. But there was still a lot of story movement here. Enough to make it a page turner for me, for sure.

I have been readying all of the books and also watched the Star's serious so I got through this book but I do not think it was one of the best. These book are meant to be part of a series but also supposed to be able to stand alone. If this is the first book I picked up, I would not have read another. It was too slow and got into too much detail about the activities of daily living. I did find a lot of that interesting from a historical point of view but it got rather tedious and would have preferred more fast paced adventure like in the first two books. I am now on the next book and it a lot better. I will continue to read the series because I love all of the characters so much. If you are reading the series, I would recommend that you read this book just so you know what is going on but if you are going to read just this one, don't bother.
