About the Author

Mike Abbott spent most of his childhood playing in the woods around his home near Bristol. After graduating with a degree in combined science, he returned to the countryside with a variety of jobs in amenity horticulture. While attending a course in arboriculture in 1976, Mike discovered Herbert Edlin’s inspiring book Woodland Crafts in Britain. From this he made his first pole-lathe and set about rediscovering the skills that had been all but lost. Two years later he undertook a course in recreation management which included a study of the recreational potential of small woodlands. Here he developed the concept of the ‘Living Wood’; no longer just a haunt for pheasants and wildlife but an environment where people could re-establish their contact with the natural world. After two years landscaping in Germany’s Black Forest, Mike returned to work in his home village near Bristol, supervising a youth-training scheme on a woodland restoration project. Here he was able to incorporate his new found love of woodland crafts and could see the fulfilment that this kind of work offered to his trainees. In 1985 he set up Living Wood Training with the aim of teaching green wood skills and promoting their potential. In 1989 he wrote his first book, Green Woodwork, and a year later gathered together a small group of enthusiasts to found the Association of Pole-lathe Turners which grew from a band of six in 1990 to an association of over 500 members within ten years. Over the past two decades, Mike has taught his skills for numerous organisations throughout Britain as well as in the USA, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. In 1993, he was joined in his venture by former green-wood pupil, Tamsin Allum, a talented artist, writer and craftsperson who shares Mike's passion for woodlands. Within a year of being together, they had bought a 10-acre woodland in Herefordshire together with five other people. They subsequently renamed it Clissett Wood after Philip Clissett, a local Victorian chairmaker whose former cottage abuts the wood. For ten years this woodland was the home to Mike’s courses in a workshop that he shared with fellow green woodworker Gudrun Leitz. Mike and Tamsin married in 1996. Since then they have lived in a cottage in East Herefordshire. In their spacious garden, they have built two traditional timber framed workshops with wattle-and-daub walls. Mike runs personal tuition and makes chairs in his workshop, while Tamsin creates stained glass illustrations in hers. As well as producing two delightful children they have also published a book entitled Living Wood - From Buying a Woodland to Making a Chair, written by Mike and illustrated by Tamsin. After 10 years of sharing the woodland workshop at Clissett Wood, Mike decided that he needed more time and space for his courses. Meanwhile Tamsin was developing her business in stained-glass, so in 2005 they sold their shares in Clissett Wood. Since then, Mike has established a new base at Brookhouse Wood which he rents from a tree-loving Farmer, four miles along the lane from their home. Mike has now finally achieved his main ambition; to live and work in the countryside in tune with the seasons. Each spring Mike and a group of volunteers reassemble the workshop structures and add new improvements to the woodland facilities. From May to September he runs his woodland courses with a break in July for a family holiday plus craft fairs and some personal tuition. In autumn he wraps up the workshop again for the winter. In the run up to Christmas he spends most of his time at home catching up on administration while giving Tamsin more time in the studio during her busiest season of the year. From January to March, Mike seizes the opportunity on sunny days, to pay his rent by carrying out woodland management at Brookhouse Wood. Otherwise his winter is split between making chairs, writing, running personal tuition and harvesting enough firewood to provide warmth for the cottage, the workshop and the studio.

What a lovely book. Perfect for someone wanting a project to use that drawknife and spokeshave. I found the writing interesting and the pictures fantastic. If you would like to build a chair on your own, using more basic methods then all those power machines, then this is for you.

The most valuable for me that for any chair discussed is given dimension of elements and shape of jigs for bending legs. New techics to make tenons on rungs is also very practical and easy to make. Once again Mr Hosker has started a new thrilling series with fiction mingled with historical fact and produced a highly enjoyable read. Another book that was hard to put down yet when finished leaves the reader hungry for more. What makes his books so darn enjoyable is the simplicity of the story. It isn't heavy reading but stimulating enjoyable reading. As I grow older It is what captures my attention leaving me hungry for more!!!!

Another well-executed novel of the Middle Ages. Once again the author puts you right there in the battles. I'm always grateful to be born in the 21st century versus the 14th century were you had famine plague pestilence and then major battles and if you are poor person you just lost out however if you had redeeming qualities that put you in the Forefront, this book gives you hope for a better tomorrow even though it is fiction.

It is his style, ease with the time’s and his ability to create characters that jump from the page, spellbinding the reader. I anxiously await Book 3, now that he’s been knighted, Sir William will start the next part of his journey.

Another excellent read!! Mr. Hosker haa become a favorite of those you value history told in a believable coherent manner.

Excellent reading . My favorite author.

Many people see three stars as a stronger negative indication than it really is. To me, three stars means average, okay, passable. That's what this book is: okay. It has some fantastic ideas and provocative suggestions. Ultimately, however, Sinek's most important ideas could be easily summed up as "remember your purpose, don't forget who you are, and sell your reason, not your product."Instead of this concise, albeit fragmented, sentence, Sinek dilutes his message with border-line ramblings and repetitive text. Before you judge, I am not preaching a "I want it NOW" message, but rather pointing out that Sinek could write in condense some of his chapters into one. Sinek admits his love of Apple, which is fine, and often uses this company to demonstrate his ideas. However, after what felt like the twentieth use of the same Apple example, his writing became tired. This is not a complaint against Apple, or Sinek's use of Apple, just the lack of variety present in the text. Sinek's argument seemed to be weakened by his almost sole uses of Southwest Airlines and Apple as companies that value WHY.This was my biggest gripe about the book, but not the only reason for my scoring. This text just did not reach me. I was not expecting a profound book, holding the key to success, but I was hoping for an engrossing text. I didn't find that. When I finished the book, I thought that his ideas could make an excellent hour-long presentation, something he actually does. Instead, Sinek's book convolutes his own work, reducing its power.I recommend this book, despite all the negativity, because there is something meaningful here. Sinek's WHY is interesting and does have merit, but his presentation fails to match his passion.

As pointed out already, the message is indeed excellent and it got me interested when I first watched the TED talk.. I bought the book waiting for the author to have elaborated more on this interesting idea, with more examples and comprehensive discussion. However, the book is insanely redundant with the same 2-3 examples repeated over and over and over and over again.. The author was trying so hard to make a many-page book out of the message and it was excruciating to go through this repetition..Save your money and (most importantly) your time and just watch the TED talk on YT..

The author's TED talk is one of the most-viewed ever; and it's really quite good. In fact, it's so good that you don't need to read this book! He takes a very, very simple concept and expands, and expands, and repeats, and seemingly never edits, and then repeats, and expands, and -- well, you get the idea. The whole thing could've been done in 50 pages or less.Example: Yes, there's a difference between WHAT one does in business and WHY one does it. And sometimes they diverge. He calls this the "Split" and has a graphic and whole chapter on it. Really?? Not needed.Example: He mines the stories of Apple, Wal-Mart, Costco, Starbucks, Martin Luther King Jr, and a few others - over & over & over & over & over again. He makes elementary and generalized statements, such as saying that NONE of the 250,000 people who came to hear Dr. King in Washington came for him; no sir, they came for themselves because their "why" connected with his "why." Uh, no; many came for him and his message or to simply support civil rights.Example: He constantly repeats the words WHY and WHAT in CAPS ALL THE TIME so you'd get the message. And then again....and again.....Example: Yes, the Apple Computer story is inspiring. But among all that WHY stuff is also the story of a dreamer with incredibly bad people skills. To simply elevate the Apple story - and retell it umpteen times - is to vastly oversimplify what made them great back then and now, and why they succeeded in spite of the way Jobs treated his employees.It's almost as if the author had about 10 stories in his pocket and decided to use nothing else at all. He created the entire "start with WHY" mantra out of the 10 stories and never went beyond them to augment, embellish, or create more learnings.So save the money, see the TED talk, and take what he says there to heart. WHY is the basis for being motivated. But there's a whole lot more to say, and sadly, he never gets to it.

I read a lot. At least a few hours a day. This book was awful.Let's start with why. Sinek is an awfully repetitive and, frankly, unskilled writer. He lays out his thesis and then repeats it like a rower repeats his stroke. As he drags out the book to whatever number of words he needed to fulfill book contract, he re/illustrates his thesis with different examples. This would have made the book slightly more tolerable, except the examples are so ordinary and well known that they will put you to sleep. Apple, Disney, JFK, Hitler. Yawn. Even that might be fine if he had spent five minutes on Wikipedia to research less-known stories about them, but it doesn't look like he did.This book should have been a column in a weekend newspaper, or, at best, a chapter in another book about leadership. Not worth your time.

I've read and studied a lot of material over the last 2 years looking for answers to my life and business. What I didn't realize, is that I was looking for this book. While no book stands alone, this book puts the big picture together for me. Without a why I can find myself drifting from one opportunity to the next, with nothing more than fleeting excitement for a new idea. This book has inspired many thoughts as I read it, but it has helped me to truly put into perspective the age-old advice to follow your passion. It's not enough to follow your passion, you got to know why you're passionate for it. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling to figure out what they want to do when they grow up. I'm off to read his follow-up book, Find Your Why.
