It’s very hard to read about abuse. It is painful to read about child abuse. I didn’t have to struggle through this one; but, had it been longer, I might have. Draper is able to deliver a powerful story within 156 pages. This story focuses on Gerald, a player on Hazelwood High’s basketball team, and also from the first book, Tears of a Tiger. We get to start from the beginning with his character. We get to visualize the hell he’s been through his whole life, starting with his mother’s addiction to drugs. After she leaves him alone at the age of 3, there’s a fire that nearly kills him and he’s sent to live with his aunt. When he is a teenager, his mother comes back into his life on the same day that his aunt passes away. Things go from bad to worse for Gerald. He not only has to deal with abuse from his step-father, he learns real quickly that his step-father is sexually abusing his little sister. Gerald uses himself as a barrier between the two, and vows to protect his little sister. There’s so much drama going down in this little book! It’s not a long read, thank God, but you get way more than you think with these characters. I always wondered what would become of Gerald when I was re-reading Tears of a Tiger. There are stories that need to be told, but it’s up to the reader to brave it’s content. If you or someone that you know has ever been abused, both physically and sexually, then this book will be painful to read. I can say that I won’t be revisiting this book, simply because of the subject matter. The writing is flawless and filled with so much emotion. I will read Draper’s books all day, but this one I don’t think will make my re-read list.Recommend? Yes, especially if you have read the first book. This is also a book (series) that deserves more praise than it has gotten. Simply put, Draper is an amazing writer when it comes to African-American culture. She makes you see that things aren’t always as they appear, and misjudgments among society breeds ignorance from every turn. I for one, can’t get enough of her work. Highly recommend!
"Forged by Fire" is the second novel in the Hazelwood High trilogy by Sharon Draper, but one does not have to be familiar with the first novel to enjoy this one. Draper centers on Gerald Nickelby, a minor character in "Tears of a Tiger", and follows his progress from a neglected three-year-old to his junior year in high school. The story is powerful, straightforward, and honest. It is sure to resonate with a wide audience. As a three-year-old, Gerald is used to abuse and neglect. His mother is a drug addict who abandons him from time to time when she is strung out. However, one time while she is absent, Gerald accidentally sets fire to their apartment. By some miracle, he survives, and he is sent to live with his Aunt Queen while his mother serves time in jail. Gerald finally learns love at Aunt Queen's, but his newfound, sheltered and safe world cannot last forever. On his ninth birthday, Gerald receives the shock of his life - his mother is out of jail, has remarried the father of her second child, and wants Gerald to come live with them. Gerald desperately wants to stay with Aunt Queen, but her untimely death propels Gerald into a world of pain. For his mother's new husband, Jordan Sparks, is a mean, abusive man who has his sights set on Gerald's younger sister, Angel. Gerald finds himself abandoned again, but fights to survive if only to save Angel, the only living person he loves.Draper's writing has an immediacy that will have readers rushing to learn what happens to Gerald and Angel. Into Gerald's unhappy life, she weaves the tragic events that were the focus of "Tears of a Tiger", combining them with the final confrontation between Gerald and his vicious stepfather. "Forged by Fire" is a book that honestly captures the trials of a poor urban African-American family, but in the midst of all the tears, Draper instills her story with warmth, faith, and hope. Draper is a gifted writer who has been able to tap into the true inner workings of complicated teenage lives.
My name is Austin. I am a 13 year old middle school student that read this book for my English class. This book is about a boy named Gerald and the ups and downs of his life. It takes place in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio in a low income neighborhood. The book from age 3 until Gerald is a junior in high school. It starts with him setting the house on fire by accident, while home alone. Because of this he goes to stay with his aunt until his mother is released from jail. On his tenth birthday his mother appears to take him home and his aunt dies. He moves in with his mom, her husband Jordan and her daughter Angel.Gerald finds out that Jordan is hitting his mother (Monique) and abusing his little sister. He gets help from his friends father and Jordan is arrested and sent to jail. After he gets out of jail he goes back and joins the family. Jordan no longer abused Angel but continued to hit Gerald and Monique. Gerald and Angel had a very positive relationship. In high school Gerald makes the basketball team and begin to make friends with the other boys on the team. One night there is a car accident where the captain of the team gets killed. Gerald is sad and confused because he couldn't do anything about the death of his friend.I recommend this book to anyone that doesn't really like reading, like me, because it keeps your attention.
Let me start by saying I am a social worker whose whole career has been working with youth and families. I read this story because it was on my daughter's reading list for battle of book. I like to know what my teen is reading. I was very moved by this tell. As a social worker we see the situation from one angle and try to work with the family where they are. I appreciated the getting to look at the internal thoughts of those involved in the situation. I think it so easy as a worker or even just as a neighbor, a teacher, church member to get jaded about or question our role in situations of abuse. This story reminds us what's at stake when we fail to be vigilant and what we gain when we offer that life line in the darkness just as Mr Washington offers to Gerald and Angel.

The first reviewer (one star) took a lot of time to discredit the accuracy of this book. I don't think "Ladyhawk" is really speaking to David Wallace-Wells's argument fairly. The future is, to say the least, uncertain, but can be understood to evolve within the bounds of wide extremes, each with a different probability. For instance, an as-yet-unknown technology might appear tomorrow that will solve or diminish the problem (a point the author makes repeatedly within the first chapter). Almost impossible, but possible. I think his point is , given the overwhelming consensus that human-caused carbon emissions (and other emissions that feedback loops will produce) is massively life-threatening to our children and grandchildren, we can't afford to wait for certainty. And so he's assembled facts from many credible sources to bolster his argument that we're in trouble.A couple of such facts that struck me were these: of the total quantity of intentional carbon burning that has occurred over the last 400 years, over half has happened since the premier of Seinfeld. 85% has occurred since the END of WWII. The compounding of global growth has resulted in enormous momentum for continued carbon burning.I don't understand why there is so much heat in the arguments of Ladyhawk and like-minded critics of those who raise this issue. I won't speculate on its sources. But I'd simply invite potential readers of this book to consider that when the greatest human-caused loss of life in human history -- World War II -- began, no one accurately predicted how it would go; how much the lives of people who lived within its theaters of operations would be changed (or abbreviated). That is one of the points that David Wallace-Wells invites readers to consider: that this WILL be worse than we think, because many are oblivious, or have a self-interest in the status quo, or maintain an optimism that will probably prove to be misplaced.Amazon lets you read the first few pages. Don't rely on my or any other reviews; go to the text and make up your own mind.Amazon lets you look.
About half of The Uninhabitable Earth is dedicated to presenting the latest research findings on the expected effects of climate change over the 21st century, with chapters on a wide range of topics including wildfires, economic collapse, and climate conflict. It is extremely well-researched—the author consulted many top climate scientists, there are copious citations and the notes section comprises a large portion of the book—yet presented in an accessible style. As in the original New York magazine article of which this is a book-length treatment, the effects of temperature increases of more than 2 degrees are covered in-depth, going up to about 6 degrees. The other half contains the author’s very literate and thought-provoking musings on the impact climate chaos is likely to have on fundamental structures such as capitalism, ethics, and our conception of history. I was impressed by the author’s restraint in not indulging in speculation. His points are well-informed and backed up with solid reasoning. The information contained in this book is extremely important, because it sounds the alarm at a time when immediate action must be taken, because it forces one to question so many fundamental assumptions behind contemporary life in a developed country, because it is founded in rigorous research on a topic that is of overwhelming significance. It raises and grapples with very big and pressing questions that will be seared onto the minds of millions over the coming century and beyond.
This is truly the most important book I have ever read, and one of the best written. It is so good, so complete, and so well-organized and argued that I immediately stopped writing my new book on the same subject, The Anthropogenic Apocalypse, after having worked on it for a year, because there is just no way that I, or any author, could outdo David Wallace-Wallace, or even come close. He has done a gigantic amount of solid research from a wide variety of sources, made the results frighteningly clear, and organized his science-based conclusions it into a horrifying, but probably accurate, depiction of the most horrendous catastrophes that wiil wreak havoc and death on the earth if the people and nations of our pale blue dot do not immediately undertake major serious programs to halt global warming – if it is not already too late. I will happily return to finishing my memoir of the sexual revolution and cheer as The Uninhabitable Earth heads to the top the charts. Albert Podell, author of Around the World in 50 Years.I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT I AM DELIGHTED THAT YOU HAVE REMOVED THAT BIASED, MISGUIDED, UNFAIR, AMD RIDICULOUSLY NEGATIVE ONE-STAR REVIEW FROM LADYHAWK.
