I'm not sure why it's so rare, but unlike so many authors the books are getting better over time. While the over all universe is sprawling, there's very little Weberish Gibberish filler. Looking forward to the next books.
I liked that it brought together some of the previous books into the fabric of the saga but I didn't like it when it ended...want more!
Finally, I cannot wait for the next one. I have read almost all of Chris's books and have enjoyed all of them. I just wish he could keep up with how fast I read. I look forward to Blockade and the next Horatio Logan book. If you decide to get this book be prepared to sit awhile because you will want to keep reading.

This is an important addition and update from Julian Huxley's Evolution: The Modern Synthesis. It is a scholarly text not a reading book. I am struck that this book, which sets itself beside Huxley's masterpiece has little of the breadth and vision displayed by Huxley. Huxley's book is by a very wide margin better written and its topics and issues better thought through, by a scientist who clearly had a complete grip of his subject. The subject matter has advanced very considerably indeed since Huxley's 1942 tome (and even since the 1974 updates) and Evolution - the Extended Synthesis is a solid and essential addition in my opinion (though not in the opinion of all experts in this field).The problem the extended synthesis has is in being written by numerous authors it suffers from not having the single expansive viewpoint of that giant of evolutionary thinking, Huxley. The other problem for me is that it does not do much to fill in the massive gaps that are overdue to be eloquently and thoroughly filled from the considerable scientific advances; it seems to jump into today's world. A big big jump from 1942. Maybe no one writes the kind of science that Huxley wrote. But with the controversy that ignorance of evolution (and biology in general) creates in today's body politic - probably about the same as in Darwin's world - I'd love to see the editors attempt a more thoroughly conceived treatise.
Massimo Pigliucci in his introduction to this book makes it clear that the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis is a provisional one subject to modification in the light of further discoveries in the field which are coming thick and fast. The accusation of cowardice made by the previous reviewer is therefore, I think, unjustified.As a non-specialist reader with a basic background in biology there were a number of concepts in this book which I found hard to comprehend. What I enjoyed in this book was coming across startling new ideas which spurred me to further reading. As an example I shall mention the article by Eva Jablonka of Tel Aviv University. She questions one of the traditional tenets of evolutionary theory, that the targets of natural selection are individual organisms. Since the bodies of humans and other higher animals contain symbionts and parasites that are transferred from one generation of the host to the next, she quotes the ideas of Zilber-Rosenberg who suggests that it may be necessary to consider such communities (of the human organism and its symbiotic bacteria) as targets of selection.When I searched for more information on this topic, I found that a developing idea was that humans are now being considered as superorganisms with two genomes that dictate phenotype, the genetically inherited human genome (25,000 genes) and the environmentally acquired human microbiome (over 1 million genes). There is now evidence that one function of these microbes in the gut is to process certain components of the diet and enable the deposition of this extracted energy in host fat depots. This would have been beneficial in the course of evolution when our ancestors did not have reliable access to food supplies, but may now contribute to unhealthy obesity.Pigliucci and other contributors state that the gene-centric approach of traditional evolutionary theory is being increasingly challenged. The developing view is that rather than consider the gene as the main or sole unit of evolution, the cell, the individual organism, or groups of organisms could be the units of natural selection in various circumstances. Fernando and Szathmary quote the view of Maynard Smith that units of evolution must multiply, show heredity across generations, and heredity should not be exact. This characterization of Darwinian dynamics is deliberately general; it is not restricted to cover living systems only. They describe their computer models of the neuronal replicator hypothesis, which suggests that groups of neurons in the brain are selected according to their "fitness", leading to the "evolution" of optimal functioning.David Sloan Wilson argues that between-group selection became the primary driving force for the evolution of human beings from primate species. He notes that (a) extant human human hunter-gather societies are fiercely egalitarian and, (b) humans are incomparably better at throwing projectiles than other primates, and infers a connection between these two observations. He suggests that throwing could be used to suppress bullying and other domineering behavior within groups, resulting in better co-operation within the group and consequently enhanced fitness.This book will, I think, become essential reading for undergraduates and researchers in the field, and also of considerable interest to the general reader.

For example, early in 2010, Jerry Fodor and Massimo Piatelli-Palmarini, published a book entitled, What Darwin Got Wrong. There view was roughly that, "We thought we'd best make clear from the outset, because our main contention in what follows will be that there is something wrong - quite possibly fatally wrong - with the theory of natural selection; and we are aware that, even among those who are not quite sure what it is, allegiance to Darwinism has become a litmus for deciding who does, and who does not, hold a `properly scientific' world view." Indeed, if one were to believe what Fodor/Piatelli-Palmarini argue, Darwinism would seem to be "dead in the water."Thankfully, we can all breathe easy with the release of, Evolution - The Extended Synthesis; "Under the heading "Extended Synthesis" this volume represents a broad survey of key ideas in this multifaceted research program, and a first look at an expanded theory of evolution as a work-in-progress. We have gathered some of the most prominent authors who have been writing about new directions in evolutionary biology and asked them to explain where they think the field is headed, and how the new concepts square with the Modern Synthesis's view of what evolution is." To be sure, this is actually a very exciting time to be reading about the field of Evolutionary Theory because, "The overcoming of gradualism, externalism, and gene centrism [a la Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene: 30th Anniversary Edition--with a new Introduction by the Author] are general hallmarks of the Extended Synthesis, whether in the forms presented here or in various other accounts to a similar effect published since the late 1990's. The editors and authors of this volume offer this extended view of evolutionary theory to the scientific community as, we hope, much food for thought and a stimulus for constructive discussions."In sum, the selections in this volume represent the most recent research into Evolutionary Theory; there are only a handful of scientists working on these issues presently. This is great for the lay reader because there are so few books advancing the views presented in this collection that there is ample time to read through the literature. I recommend starting with this book, Evolution - The Extended Synthesis. Some other books in this area are: Evolution and the Levels of Selection,Darwin's Conjecture: The Search for General Principles of Social and Economic Evolution,Evolution in Four Dimensions: Genetic, Epigenetic, Behavioral, and Symbolic Variation in the History of Life (Life and Mind: Philosophical Issues in Biology and Psychology), and The Evolutionary World: How Adaptation Explains Everything from Seashells to Civilization.
Presents some of the more recent developments in the elucidation of the extended synthesis covering a fair range of topics and perspectives. Not exactly light reading, but well worth the time.

I like the large calendars like this but the only thing I don't like (I couldn't tell from description or reviews) is that the book won't open flat. That's the only draw back for me. I'm still going to use it, but I prefer ones that open flat as I keep it open to the current month on my desk always.
It’s so cute and perfect for what I was wanting! I wanted a monthly planner, not the daily/weekly style. This was perfect because the months give me plenty of room to write and there also plenty of additional places for notes and reminders!

Not badly written but not a mystery or a thriller. Pretty boring actually and predictable.Christine, Carols ex lover, husband has been killed. Christine is afraid that she will be acused so she asks Carol, a police detective, to help.First, I could not imagine Christine and Carol could have ever been lovers. Christine was a high society dame that would never leave that life style, much less her husband, for a lowly lesbian life with Carol...a police detective.Second, why would Carol be interested in the ex Christine when she had just started a hot relationship with Syble.Third, I was so tired of all the predictable and boring dislikes and affairs in the husbands office. It was soooo obvious who the killer was I skimmed the last half just to find out if Carol and Syble end up together.I will not be reading the third book in this series.
This second book in the Carol Ashton series is even better than the first one,and knowing the protagonists from Lessons in Murdermakes it easy to get into the plot.
"Fatal Reunion" is the second installment in the Carol Ashton detective series. The reader is introduced to Christine, Carol's ex-lover who was briefly mentioned at the end of "Lessons in Murder." Although Carol is not officially on the case, Christine begs for her to help prove her innocence when her husband is found murdered. But as Carol and Christine become re-acquainted after three years of separation and a bad breakup they both realize that their feelings and desires have not completely disappeared causing significant strains in Carol's new relationship with Sybil. Carol finds herself at a fork in the road concerning which woman she wants. In addition Carol remains in the closet in fear that her lesbian relationships will be revealed and her professional career jeopardized.I enjoyed this book because it provided insights into the character of Carol pertaining to her motivations in her personal life that were absent in "Lessons in Murder." The detective work is good but the book itself is a little too thin. This isn't my favorite lesbian detective series but that won't stop me from continuing reading subsequent books in this series. I am anxious to see the relationship between Carol and Sybil progress further.
I really enjoyed this one. the plot is slightly mad as we follow the supposedly sensible Detective into the high life world of her long time ex, and watch as jealousy and cattiness play out. but the relationship with Sybil just about keeps her grounded and their characters develop throughout.
I enjoyed reading Fatal Reunion. It was a nice time killer but not a book I would particularly read again. This is not to say I don't plan on reading the third book in the series. Just that the author walks the reader through the mystery from the first murder to the arrest. I am happy to say Sybil made it into the second book and the scenes between her and Carol adjusting to life together were nice.

Nothing I'm going to say should deter you from choosing to read Drums of Autumn, the fourth book in the Outlander series. However, because Amazon tends to want readers to review, I am going to mention some elements of this book that gave me pause and kept it from being perfect. Overall, the book is as well written, researched and detailed as the previous three and worth the time I invested it it, but for me this one is not as thrilling and at times, felt ponderous. I plan to read the fifth book, but I am approaching it with the trepidatious fear of a decline in the overall quality of the series.******************************************************SPOILERS**********************************************************This book centers on the relationship between Claire's and Jamies' daughter, Brianna and Roger McKenzie Wakefield a historian and friend to Claire and Bree. They are two throughly modern young people in their early to late 20s. Both time travel to the mid-18th Century, Bree in search of her mother and father, Roger in search of Bree. I found it easier to accept Claire's initial time travel and subsequent return because both her generational upbringing ( England in the 20s and 30s) and her marriage to a scholarly historian would give her just a bit if a leg up on making the transition. Bree, on the other hand is a child of the 50s and 60s. She's been brought up in America and retains her fairly modern speech patterns and many of the idioms. Those idiosyncrasies don't seem to cause much if a stir among the strangers that she meets. It's not a huge thing, but it did notice it.My second and somewhat larger complaint lay in Bree's Olympic quality conclusion jumping. She and Roger become married by hand fasting and consummate their relationship. Two days later she is raped by a pirate. Upon finding herself pregnant she is immediately convinced that it is the child of the pirate. Much of the relationship angst between her and Roger revolves around that assumption. I found it a bit drawn out and contrived, but then many of Bree's actions and attitudes fell into that category for me. Bottom line, I found Bree to be impulsive, headstrong and a bit of a pain in the backside.The best thing Ms. Galbadon does is to write characters who are very, very human. In other words, flawed. I am giving Ms. Galbadon the benefit of the doubt that that was her thinking behind the writing of Bree's character.My last concern centers on a scene with Claire as she performs inguinal hernia surgery on a man in the midst of a dinner party. Even in the barbaric American colonies, a woman performing surgery in the region of a man's testicles in the midst of a dinner party strains credulity. The fact that this surgery was witnessed almost without comment by the dinner guests breaks it completely. It was a well written scene, but I just couldn't "buy it."I've enjoyed these books up to this point. Fingers crossed that the author's imagination doesn't stray too far in to the realm of incredulity in the next books.
I never thought I'd be the kind of person who would get swept up in a series of thousand-page epic fantasy adventure book, but here I am having finished book #4, mad that I have to wait a couple of days until the next installment arrives in the mail. I spoiled myself a little for Drums of Autumn, not so much on its contents, but I became aware that many fans consider this to be one of their least favorites, and one of the slowest of the books. So I went into it with a bit of a bias that I have to say was happily proven incorrect. For me, this book almost lived up to Voyager, and was miles above Dragonfly in Amber.Not going to lie, for me one of my favorite elements of the series will always be the Highlands, and I'm still disappointed we didn't get more time there. I assumed I didn't love DiA as much as the others because the setting moved from Scotland to France. But that wasn't it, because the move to the American colonies I had been dreading wound up working well. I think what went wrong with DiA was the remake of Jamie into kind of a dandy, trying to fit in with the silly French noble class. Jamie just doesn't make sense to me as a character outside of a rugged setting with a battle to fight. I worried I wouldn't enjoy the expanding cast of characters, or the shift in focus outside the Jamie/Claire dynamic, but it wasn't as clumsy as I'd feared. That said, I like both Brianna and Roger a little less after this book. In large doses, they are both super annoying. But I could read about Ian (and Rollo!) and Lord John all day.I didn't think the plot was slow. In fact, it gets a little old for me when Jamie and Claire have to escape death every 20 pages. But there was still a lot of story movement here. Enough to make it a page turner for me, for sure.
I have been readying all of the books and also watched the Star's serious so I got through this book but I do not think it was one of the best. These book are meant to be part of a series but also supposed to be able to stand alone. If this is the first book I picked up, I would not have read another. It was too slow and got into too much detail about the activities of daily living. I did find a lot of that interesting from a historical point of view but it got rather tedious and would have preferred more fast paced adventure like in the first two books. I am now on the next book and it a lot better. I will continue to read the series because I love all of the characters so much. If you are reading the series, I would recommend that you read this book just so you know what is going on but if you are going to read just this one, don't bother.
