I love all things Liz. I've read it all! She is fully responsible for creating in my heart a full blown obsession with the book of Ruth.I could not wait for this book as I loved The Women of Christmas and I knew this book would be wonderful.I planned to wait until Lent and use it as a guide for bible time. It stared at me from my nightstand taunting me for a few days. I read another book and ignored it. I re read Sally Clarkson blogs. But then I could take it no more!!! I stayed up two nights until the wee hours to finish it. I could not put it down. I wanted to stay with the Mary's. I did not want to leave their dedication and fearless love for Jesus. I want them to keep showing me how to live the Lord as they did.I did not want to see our Lord suffer but I felt like I had to stay with them. I could not pull myself away.It happens when one is blessed to read an amazing book it is so bitter sweet when you finish the last page. That is how I felt with The Women of Easter. In so doing we're given a first hand account of those days as we see through the 3 Mary's eyes.Only 8 chapters long and with a study guide included at the back this is a tremendous resource for walking through Holy Week and experiencing the emotion of the occasion. The intensity and cruelty of the crucifixion and the confusion then elation of the resurrection are all described brilliantly by stepping through the 4 consolidated gospels line-by-line using multiple versions to add further embellishment.Higgs ends with the tremendous encouragement for us all that just like Mary Magdalene whom Jesus tasked with sharing the news of His resurrection with the disciples, we too are tasked with the same great news of Easter: He is Risen. He is Risen Indeed!Highly recommended.

I loved the idea of the book, and also enjoyed learning more about the Mary’s, but a lot of the writing was opinion based versus fact based. The author may or may not be right in her assumptions - I’m sure she’s incredibly knowledgeable - but they are assumptions, nonetheless, and not what I was hoping to get out of this book.

As a devotional meditation leading up to Easter, this book is great. Liz "speaks" in a very folksy way to her readers, sharing the multitude of Bible translations she has used to get the feel of each passage. And she has some wonderful insights sparking out of that intensive study of the text.I can see it being used in a small group if everyone has her own copy. I got it, though, to use as background study for a pre-Easter S.S. series. Trying to use it as a basis for a S.S. series where the class members did not each have the book was not very successful. I didn't want to just read it to them, but the chapters were hard to summarize, sharing nuggets came out choppy, and coming up with ways to discuss it was hard. Could easily just be my own limitations that are the problem. The discussion questions printed at the end of the book presupposed having read the chapter, so were not very useful for my class prep.Again, I would highly recommend as personal Lenten reading and meditation.

This book was so eye opening and a must read for any Catholic woman. Being able to put myself in these women's shoes and also see how they responded to Jesus' love during Holy Week especially was inspiring and beautiful. Easy to read and relatable to every day but still able to be saturated with scripture and referneces. Higgs is able to bring a complex interpretation of the Bible to an easy to understand book with prayer interwoven throughout. I was pleasantly surprised by how deep it was.

In some ways, I love this book. It reminds me of the book "The Arab Alphabet" by Awde and Samano in the sense that it drills the letters one at a time, adding more letters into the mix two at a time so that they become automatic. That's how I learned to type, and that's how I learned the Arabic alphabet. I copied that method myself for teaching Cyrillic to people. So I highly recommend the book to first get all the Hebrew letters into your head. I even bought a second copy recently to to review the alphabet.As others have mentioned, the book does have typos and similar errors. In one chapter, the answers in the back are in a different order than the problems. I don't think that should stop anyone at all from using the book. Anyone who is smart enough to learn a foreign alphabet will not have any trouble realizing the problem. The other typos are not very frequent, and I think won't hurt anyone.The more serious problem, in my opinion, is his misuse of grammatical terminology. It's unfortunate that so few Americans learn grammar anymore. What he calls a "direct object" is what most books on Hebrew call a "definite direct object". He then calls the "indefinite direct object" the "indirect object". As far as I know, no one else uses "indirect object" that way. (Though I've learned over the decades never to make an absolute statement about languages.)In addition, the way that he transliterates vowels is a little confusing. I don't think that should stop anyone from using the book, because I think anyone who is smart enough to learn a foreign alphabet can learn how he transliterates vowels, and stick with it through this book. There is certainly no standard way to write vowel sounds in English, and so an author has to choose something and be consistent, and he does that. The alternative is to use standard phonetic symbols, but that is one more obstacle for many people who might otherwise benefit from this book.Overall, I really appreciate the book, and I hate to criticize someone who worked very hard and helped me too! I think that someone who has never studied foreign languages should be a little careful not to believe everything in the book.

This book is a good introduction to the Hebrew language. I go so far as to say it is essential if you want to understand the scriptures to know Hebrew at some level. While the book will not make you fluent in the language, it will give you a solid foundation.

I really like the book and the layout, however, so far, there appears to be some technical issues with the transliterations for lesson seven. This is concerning because it throws the things I have learned so far into doubt. I have emailed the author and am waiting on a response.

Very helpful in learning the language. There is a pronunciation guide in the back that is very helpful.

I could use the materials instruction, but from the title I was expecting to find more photos of ancient art and amazing technique. Even the old works shown were photographed from too far away see much other than they were huge.The contemporary art projects were odd choices. I was not inspired by them. Get this book on sale.

I saw this book at a Mosaic class and was impressed by it. I found that it had a lot of good ideas; interesting projects and provided a lot of information to the newbie. I love purchasing used books from Amazon, if I see a book somewhere that I like I always check to see if I can find it used on Amazon. By purchasing books this way I don't feel guilty. :)

I have been trying to find a mosaic book that has three-dimensional designs and this comes as close as I have found. It has beautiful ideas and it not craftsy as some mosaic books are. The designs are more art than crafts.

A wonderful collection of stone,smalti,glass,and tiles,have been created over the centuries for us to see through the years.This book shows how some of the work is created with different stones and glass.It also shows the beautiful mosaics that through the centuries Greece and Rome created for their own living quarters.Through this book being myself a mosaic artist,you will learn how to create from scratch wonderful pieces.Modern and old reproductions,for your own to keep or sell.

Lots of interesting detail and info about history and what has gone before. Then some good modern interpretations of the ancient designs into the modern.

I enjoy this book because it stimulates my artistic nature, but gives me ideas that are sophisticated yet achievable. The historic background is well presented and well balanced with the hands-on part of the book.

I own a few different mosaic books and I like this one the best. I found the designs presented to be more sophisticated than in other books. I was also glad that this book gives you a list of the exact materials used, instead of just expecting you to use found materials. Truly inspirational artwork and examples in full-color are featured throughout the book.The book starts out with a great history lesson on mosaics that spans about 25 pages. Next, materials, tools, and design are covered. I was impressed that this included photos of each tool. The basic techniques you will use to make the projects including cutting and laying mosaics both directly and indirectly. Finishing methods such as grouting, sealing and framing are also discussed.Sixteen projects follow. Each includes basic step-by-step instructions with photos. A large photo of the finished piece is also included. My favorite project was the straight back art nouveau chair. I also loved the brightly colored three-dimensional lizard wall hanging, a tabletop with grape and wine design, a Byzantine style tree of knowledge panel and a beautiful Aztec pot.I really appreciated the lists of suppliers and places such as museums and theaters, arranged by style, to go for ideas. I have had a hard time finding materials in the past. My only wish is that it provided templates for some of the designs. This is the best how-to book I have found for someone that actually wants to make quality mosaics.

I’m not one to read books written by celebrities, but I read a review of this memoir that intrigued me enough to give it a try. I was maybe ten pages in when I sat down and ordered five copies for gifts—my faith in its being a great book was that strong. As I continued to the finish, that view was momentarily tested here and there, but ultimately confirmed. Forget that this woman is a famous actress, forget that she’s the sexiest being on the planet, this woman is *deep.*In *Dear Mr. You* Parker has written a series of pseudo-letters to particular men, most of them generically designated (“Dear Emergency Contact,” “Dear Yaqui Indian Boy,” “Dear Grandpa,” etc.), who have all been part of or influenced her life. The narrative is in the second person (the subjects are all addressed as “you”), which as it turns out is an elliptical but effective form of storytelling. This approach lends an offbeat perspective, in which the person addressed seems to know more about Parker than she does, while at the same time each letter is equally revealing about both of them. I call the book a memoir, but it defies categorization—feels like fiction, structured like essay. Really it’s just one soul speaking directly to others, with us peering over their shoulders.The writing is simultaneously casual and sophisticated. Offhand sentences thrust you into the heart of life. Tiny telling moments echo with the particular and the universal. Few words are ever wasted. Parker has a fine ear for dialogue and a good grasp of idea, and all of this gets thrown at the page in a way that seems hasty but is really cunning. Parker is impatient with stylistic norms like quotation marks; she uses them from time to time, but often the words just can’t be held within the fences of convention and pour onto the page for the reader to sort out. I’m a copy editor and ought to hate this but I don’t.As for the Parker who emerges from this gumbo, she is passionate and inward, loving and angry, vulnerable and strong, earthbound and spiritual, all of human experience right there for us to laugh and cry with. The white dwarf star, once so carefree, starts sucking the life force from its stingy blue companion, and a mutual thievery ensues until a supernova rolls up and obliterates everything they shared together. Somehow the white dwarf limps onward, meekly blinking, its space tag now reading, “Hi! My name is Zombie Star! Ask me about codependence!”--Mary-Louise Parker (Dear Mr. You p 134)I, yes, am very sleepy and unable to control reflexes. What does it really matter, though, if I just belched softly and consequently peed on myself? Yes, I am breathing so loudly through my mouth that I appear to be snoring with my eyes open and I smell. I am smelly. Look past that to the swaddled perfection in the bassinet. He vibrates with goodness and he is mine. You are correct that I am making a blunder but it’s my mistake to make. I've always loved and admired Mary Louise Parker as an actress and to discover that she's an amazing writer was an absolute delight. She's honest, real and unafraid to be who she is. A quality I aspire to. I look forward to discovering more of her writings.

Beautifully written (and the audio version is even better with her sweet voice conveying exactly the right emotions for each circumstance). While my (advanced) reading kindergartener "can" read this on his own, we make it a family affair! The Bird & Squirrel books are HILARIOUS! The sound effects in these books are what got my little guy reading in the first place. What kid doesn't want to sound out "BONK!" and "Zooooooooooom!"?? The graphics are bright and appealing, and we find ourselves belly laughing as a family. Thank you for writing a FUN, CLEAN, and well written graphic series for our little guy! Please keep writing! We can't get enough! I know that our son's Bird & Squirrel series will be a set that sits on the shelves in our home (or his) forever. It's what he grabs when riding in the car, sitting at the table eating breakfast, or curled up on the couch. The. Best.

It's my mission in life to be more like Bird! Get it for any kid 4 years old through 5th grade! I find it hilarious as a mom and teacher!!

We've been waiting for a new Bird and Squirrel for a long time and this one was as great as all the others!

{My thoughts} – So much adventure and so many things to be scared about. Red is Squirrel’s wife. We met her in the last book. At the end of the last book we were introduced to their daughter Birdie. Yes, she is named after Bird.Red has to make a delivery that will keep her gone for a couple of days. Squirrel is left home to take care of their daughter. Bird visits and gets Birdie all excited about going on an adventure to find Bigfeet. This is after Squirrel had already told his daughter they were going to stay inside.They do go on an adventure to look for Bigfeet, but they don’t exactly find him or her. They do find all kinds of other things that are fun, but Squirrel is so scared of everything that he attempts to push those fears on everyone around him. It’s one of those interesting concepts when you really think about it. Push the fear on another, get them to believe it and not be afraid of things alone. The only problem is that Bird and Birdie aren’t really afraid of anything.I really liked this book. It showed so many great friendship type things. It also showed the relationship between a father and daughter. The relationship between n uncle and niece. I enjoy when things unravel and a lot has unraveled in this series. I wouldn’t have imagined the author was going to bring it to where it is now, but I absolutely love that he did. This has been a really fun series to read and I hope there will be more books added to it in the future.
