This is the worst textbook I have ever purchased on Kindle. There are no page numbers so if you are in class, you will have no idea what page your teacher is referancing. None of the tables or charts are readable, and the digital book has lost 80% of the printed books format. What a waste of time and money.
Perfect as described. Bang for your buck! Would recommend and use again.
Book has all the information i need to be sucessful. I don't like the dvd it could either just be eliminated completely or change it so when you use it, it is more friendly to use.
Awesome book. Arrived as scheduled..

From The New England Journal of Medicine
The locked-in syndrome is a complication of a cerebrovascular accident in the base of the pons. The patient is alert and fully conscious but quadriplegic, with lower-cranial-nerve palsies. Only vertical movements of the eyes and blinking are possible. At the age of 43, Jean-Dominique Bauby, who was editor of Elle and a robust bon vivant, suffered such a stroke. After 20 days in a deep coma, he gradually regained consciousness. His right eyelid was sutured shut to prevent corneal ulcerations, he was fed through a gastric tube, he drooled uncontrollably, he breathed through a tracheostomy tube, his urine drained from a catheter, and his bottom was wiped by others. He felt as if he were trapped in a diving bell, but his mind was free as a butterfly. Bauby wrote The Diving Bell and the Butterfly solely by blinking his left eye in response to the reading of an alphabet, arranged according to the frequency with which each letter occurs in French (E, S, A, R, I,... W). A friend read off the letters, pausing when Bauby blinked. Letters laboriously became words, and then sentences. I brought this book along on an airplane that took me to a meeting in a distant city. Reading it made me hope that air traffic would delay our arrival. It is a remarkable tribute to the human spirit -- a book that will inspire any physician, medical student, nurse, or patient. There is no self-pity and no thought of physician-assisted suicide. The tone is as ironic and dry as perhaps only the French can be. In a seaside hospital, Bauby, imprisoned in his paralyzed body, recounts his days. He notes that a stroke such as his is usually fatal, but "improved resuscitation techniques have prolonged and refined the agony." Now, instead of directing one of France's leading fashion magazines, he is strapped in a wheelchair, completely dependent on others for the simplest demands of life: shut the door, roll me over, fluff up a pillow. "A domestic event as commonplace as washing can trigger the most varied emotions." And then there was the boor who, with a conclusive "Good night," turned off the Bordeaux-Munich soccer game at halftime and left. Bauby's attendants dressed him not in hospital garb, but in his own clothes ("Good for the morale," according to the neurologist). Bauby comments, "If I must drool, I may as well drool on cashmere." He is, as he says, a "voiceless parrot" who has made his nest in a dead-end corridor of the neurology department. When the stretcher-bearer who returns him to his room leaves with a hearty "Bon appetit!" the effect on Bauby is the same as "saying `Merry Christmas' on August 15." Fed by two or three bags of brownish fluid instilled into a gastric tube, Bauby recalls his culinary skills -- boeuf en gelee and homemade sausage -- and melon, red fruit, and oysters, but above all, sausage. He imagines spending a day with his children, lying in bed beside his lover, and flying to Hong Kong, and he dreams that Radovan Karadzic, leader of the Bosnian Serbs, is performing a tracheotomy on him. In the Cafe de Flore, noxious gossip from the lower depths of Parisian snobbery poisons the air: "Did you know that Bauby is now a total vegetable?" Bauby, "to prove that my IQ was still higher than a turnip's," begins a remarkable correspondence, not by pen but by blinks. "The arrival of the mail [had] the character of a hushed and holy ceremony." Every sentence of this arduously written book is a jewel burnished by a rare disease and still rarer intelligence. Bauby died only two days after the publication of his book in France. Reviewed by Robert S. Schwartz, M.D. Copyright © 1998 Massachusetts Medical Society. All rights reserved. From the Inside Flap
In 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor-in-chief of French Elle, the father of two young childen, a 44-year-old man known and loved for his wit, his style, and his impassioned approach to life. By the end of the year he was also the victim of a rare kind of stroke to the brainstem. After 20 days in a coma, Bauby awoke into a body which had all but stopped working: only his left eye functioned, allowing him to see and, by blinking it, to make clear that his mind was unimpaired. Almost miraculously, he was soon able to express himself in the richest detail: dictating a word at a time, blinking to select each letter as the alphabet was recited to him slowly, over and over again. In the same way, he was able eventually to compose this extraordinary book. By turns wistful, mischievous, angry, and witty, Bauby bears witness to his determination to live as fully in his mind as he had been able to do in his body. He explains the joy, and deep sadness, of seeing his children and of hearing his aged father's voice on the phone. In magical sequences, he imagines traveling to other places and times and of lying next to the woman he loves. Fed only intravenously, he imagines preparing and tasting the full flavor of delectable dishes. Again and again he returns to an "inexhaustible reservoir of sensations," keeping in touch with himself and the life around him. Jean-Dominique Bauby died two days after the French publication of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This book is a lasting testament to his life.

I chose to read this book because I was fascinated by how it was written. I thought it may be depressing and that I might not finish it. How wrong I was. Yes I was sad, after all it is a true story that I knew was not ending well. What I didn't know was how inspired I would be. It is one of the most beautiful books I have read. From the beginning I was mesmerized and I desperately wanted it to end with a miraculous recovery. It is a book that I will read again and again. Each time, I suspect, I will find something new to examine and discuss. It is a book I will often recommend.
Tears rolled down my cheeks as I finished this book, but not because of the tragedy of Bauby's illness. I was filled with gratitude for the loving gift to the world that this slim book is. It is not at all what I expected after seeing Julian Schnabel's movie. Which is not to criticize the movie, but the book itself is something very different. It is a sensitive, humorous, and beautifully written reflection that conveys Bauby's appreciation for life--before his illness and even after it. His quick and nimble mind, the butterfly, roams freely, lighting on his memories, his loves, people who touched him, evoking the preciousness of experience.
A Review of: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, by Jean-Dominique BaubyThe 8th of December 1995 began as a relatively unremarkable day for Jean-Dominique Bauby, Editor of Elle magazine in France. That evening, Jean-Dominique would endure a colossal cerebrovascular accident that would leave him with locked in syndrome, resulting in the inability to move and speak. Using a ghostwriter, Claude Mendibil, and only the blinking of his left eye, Bauby gives the reader a glimpse into his current life and thoughts as well as overlooked memories form his past. Jean-Dominique’s use of a diving bell and a butterfly encompass his take on his new life, restricted in body but free in mind to take flight to new and old places. His descriptive telling of the experiences, thoughts and memories Bauby has draws the reader in and reminds us to cherish even the most mundane of experiences. The following paragraphs will highlight some of his experiences in the chapters.Prologue: The initial introduction to Jean-Dominique’s waking life. The pain he experiences upon waking without the ability to move or sense whether he is hot or cold. It is here the reader first understands what lock in syndrome is and how while it is quite awful, he is able to escape reality by exploring in his mind and creating vivid scenes as well as re-experience memories. The Wheelchair: A number of white-coated professionals place him in a wheelchair for the first time. He still unsure exactly what his situation is and remains the same after his short lived and unceremonious wheel chair experience when he is left alone once again. This should an eye opener for all professionals that while we are busy individuals we must take time to be present with our patients.Prayer: This chapter discusses Bauby’s realization of needed to achieve smaller goals rather than grandiose plans. In his mind and prayers, he assigns each spirit a specific healing task that brings a small comfort but little reprieve. The Alphabet: Bauby uses the French alphabet ordered by frequency to communicate. He discusses the simple yet tedious way he converses with others as well as the differences in communication partners that can be both fatiguing and enjoyable.Tourists: Bauby describes the rehabilitation room, a place where individuals of various levels of ability work on their recovery. During a particular exercise, he expresses feeling like a statue in a room full of tourists, who cannot acknowledge him.Guardian Angel: Sandrine, his speech therapist and guardian angel, returned to him the ability to communicate and remain connected with others. Unfortunately, we are also told that many of his caretakers fail to use this communication mode resulting frustrating experiences. The Photo: This chapter reminisces about his last time spent with his father, one where he was the caretaker for his fail elderly father, prior to the stroke. The contrast between his positions then and now points out how fast situations can change for any one of us.Voice Offstage and My Lucky Day: Here Jean-Dominique briefly discusses his fears and discontent with medical professionals as well as his own body.Through a Glass, Darkly: It is Father’s Day, and Jean Dominique writes of the tender love of his children and they way they are have grown into personalities that are influenced by their lives.Paris: A description of his how his views and feelings towards the city of Paris, Bauby is reminded during his trips to Paris that the city has continued to bustle and time has gone on without him.The Vegetable: This chapter marks 6 months since the dramatic shift in his life; he now sends monthly letters to family and friends. He receives many in return and feels proud to be able to exert his unwillingness to be called a vegetable, if even not in his presence.Twenty to One: A now painful memory of a trip to the racetrack with an old friend, where conversation, enjoyment, food and drink resulted in the loss of opportunity to win 20:1 odds on a particular racehorse, one who’s name he struggles to remember. This chapter is full of regret of for opportunities not seized but also of opportunities he will never again experience. The Duck Hunt: The stroke left him with hearing problems that make everyday noises sometimes unbearable, in this case the incessant quacking of a nearby patient’s movement detection device. He retreats to his mind and listen to butterflies to escape the unbearable noise.Sunday: His least favourite day of the week. The hospital becomes a ghost town with only minimal staff and visitors. This day is often lonely, particularly since he is unable to adjust the television or read a book by himself. The Ladies of Hong Kong: Here he describes his mind’s travels from places he a been a number times to others like Hong Kong, where fate has always disallowed him. He also recalls a memory of a friend who was captured and held by the Hezbollah for years and ponders the fact that he now feels imprisoned much as his friend was. “A Day in the Lifeâ€: This second to last chapter is where the read will at least read about the day when his life was forever changed. His description of the day as well as the songs on the radio give the impression that he had no idea what was to come.Season of Renewal: This final chapter describes some of his progress, his joy of family time, and his acknowledgement of his new life.My only criticism is that while Jean-Dominique’s descriptions are both eloquent and vivid enough to paint a picture of his experiences, each chapter feels separate from the next, leaving the reader to try and piece together the bigger picture. This does not overly distract from the enormity of the task Bauby completed writing his memoir only blinking his left eye. Finally, any individual who works in the medical setting will find insight both into patient’s lives and how they can improve their experiences in the smallest of ways. This memoir may also benefit those who have loved ones who have experienced the devastation a stroke can cause by giving them a small glimpse into the mind of someone who is no longer able to communicate as they once were. This book also gives hope that though life may be permanently altered by terrible events, there can be renewal and new joy in the unexpected.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a must read kind of book. Its author did not write it in a conventional way. Jean-Dominique Bauby, a 43 year old French man, who was the editor chief of Elle magazine in France, wrote this book with his eyelid. He suffered a stroke that caused him to lose the ability to control or move his entire body but one eye lid. His intellect was intact, and he could hear and see well. This condition is called locked-in syndrome, because the person is literally locked inside of his own body. A French phonoaudiologist taught Bauby how to "talk" using his eye lid, so he could communicate with the health team that was trying to help him. His close friends and family also learned how to understand this new way of talking. Bauby went on to dictate this book with his eyelid while one of his therapists wrote it down on paper. It is a beautiful story of how amazing the human mind is. How hard it is to have a perfect intelligent mind imprisoned in a broken body. Above all, it teaches us a lesson of how friendship and companionship are much more important than we seem to treat it. It teaches me a lot, one of the things is not taking life for granted as something like this could happen at anytime and i wouldn't know or have any plans for it. Another one is seeing the will that man takes to survive and how strong the man is to keep pushing no matter how hard things get to me it seems like an impossible task but somehow he still does it. It's a must read book, it's very uplifting to see his spirit even tho hes been through things all of us couldn't even imagine the struggles he went through.
My son started reading this to me while I was in the hospital with a massive brain hemorrhage. Mine was luckily not in the brain stem so I do not have locked-in syndrome. At any rate, it was too soon for me, too close to the uncertainty I was facing in my own life. Now, after a year and a half, I came back to it and, luckily, I was able to read it for myself and not rely on others. The book is amazing. Bauby is a much stronger and more philosophical person than I am. He has a rich internal life that he uses to sustain himself, along with vivid memories, the love of his family, his children, and his friends. The book is not a chronological telling of a story. It is a series of thoughts and events, things that stuck in his mind, things that elucidate his condition. They are often touching, frequently depressing, but always enlightening. The book is a quick read, but not a light one.

I have a passion for all kinds of poetry but my favorite poetic forms have been the Asian variety from China and Japan. I have also read and wrote reviews of numerous volumes of Asian poetry. This unique collection (The Ink Dark Moon: Love poems by Ono No Komachi and Izumi Shikibu women of the ancient court of Japan translated by Jane Hirshfield with Mariko Aratani) of Japanese love poems are just fantastic and beautiful. The ancient Heian court of imperial Japan was one of the most culturally advanced societies at that time. Women played an important part of this cultural enlightenment, writing some of the most profound poetry and stories at that time. These poems provide an insight into the love thoughts between lovers among the Heian elite. The emotional feelings come out in these poems in a clear and concise way which is a pure joy to read. This is a classic that lovers of Japanese poetry will want to have in their personal collection. I was moved by the pure beauty of these poems written with emotional experiences and intellectual wit of these two ladies of the court.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Haiku Moments: How to read, write and enjoy haiku)
Many Americans are aware of the Japanese verse form known as Haiku. Fewer know about Tanka, which was used by many classic poets including the two featured in this extraordinary book, both founding figures of Japanese literature. Since I do not read Japanese, I cannot evaluate the translations in comparison to the originals, yet a wonderful essay demonstrates both the challenges the translator faces and the sensitivity brought to these readings. This book opened a new world in literature to me. I recommend it highly.
The Ink Dark Moon, translated by Jane Hirshfield with Mariko Aratani has been around for a while. It was first copyrighted in 1986 and the poems inside it were written centuries ago by primarily two women of the ancient court of Japan -- Ono no Komachi (834?-?) and Izumi Shikibu (974? - 1034?) Each is a love poem originally written in the tanka style of 5-7-5-7-7. The poems are timeless and speak to the hearts of lovers everywhere. I enjoyed this book the first time I read it and then purchased a copy for my personal library.
Beautiful book of poems that are stunning and excellent examples of Japanese writing. The translations are very strong, and they are surprisingly relevant and hold up today. I highly recommend this book!
The Heian period of Japan was artistically fertile time that produced numerous classic works of literature. It was even more remarkable in that most of the major literary figures of the time were women. Among those great women, Ono no Komachi and Izumi Shikibu were two of the best. Their waka poetry (now called 'tanka') is some of the best literature ever written in Japan and the poetesses themselves have become the stuff of legend.Doing justice in translating ancient Japanese into modern English is no easy task, but Hirshfield and Aratani have created translations that are as beautiful as the originals. Anyone who enjoys poetry, who loves love, or who is interested in other cultures and finding the universal passions of the human heart will enjoy this book.--M. Kei, editor of Fire Pearls : Short Masterpieces of the Human Heart
Not only does Jane Hirshfield do an insanely talented job of translating (about which you can read an entire explanation of her process at the end of the collection), but Komachi and Shikibu have written poems that have transcended space and time and will leave you deeply moved by their beauty and simplicity, again and again. It's rare to find such revered women writers as these women were in their era (this book also includes a very interesting introduction on the historical and social context of these writers). A must have for poetry lovers.
I received this book, well wrapped, and exactly in the condition advertised. It's a deeply moving example of Japanese poetry which I believe anybody would like. It is about 1500 years old and feels like it was written only yesterday. The heart writes itself, I suppose, no matter when or where.
One of my favorite collections of poems. The translation is wonderfully done! The poems in this collection always transport me to a different place! Great read!

From Library Journal
Written by members of the Teen Book Project and inspired by the classic Our Bodies, Ourselves, this third edition of a book first published in 1981 provides information about health and sexuality for teenagers. Presented here is the latest information on the physical and emotional aspects of puberty, sexuality, healthcare, sexually transmitted diseases, safer sex and birth control, living with violence, mental health, and eating disorders. Artwork by and quotations from teenagers about their experiences in these areas bring the content to life and set the book apart from more standard works such as Richard Walker's The Family Guide to Sex and Relationships (LJ 2/15/97). Each chapter has a list of associations and print and nonprint resources. An excellent, extremely useful source for young adults and educators; highly recommended for all collections.?Barbara M. From Booklist
Although there's evidence of updating, reorganization, and rewriting in this revision of the 1987 edition, much of this comprehensive landmark book on sex, physical and emotional health, and personal relationships remains the same--including many of the original quotes, most of which seem to have worn surprisingly well. The relaxed yet authoritative tone has been preserved, as has the level of detail, which is still very explicit. The authors have included more about eating disorders and AIDS; the section on drugs has been expanded, as have the lists of recommended readings; and a new chapter on violence combines discussion of gang violence and sexual harassment with material on rape (which also appeared in the earlier book). There are also a few new illustrations. Why the authors changed the names of some of the teens who are quoted (in one instance Elaine becomes Ellie) is a mystery, but that certainly won't bother today's readers, who will find emotional support as well as specific answers to most of their questions in this nonjudgmental resource that proceeds from the assumption that thoroughly informed teens can make better personal choices. The content it does have, I like very much. The main problem is that the text "Completely revised and expanded" somehow gives you the impression that that revision and expansion probably happened sometime within the last 15 years. Nope. In fact: there is nothing in this book about the Internet whatsoever -- despite how large it looms in our kids' lives.Nothing about cybersafety, on-line bullying, chat rooms, sexting, Internet porn -- oh, this is strange: nothing about PORN at all. Even all the way back when I was a youngun I of course had that friend who'd found his dad's Hustler stash and yeah, I was a little confused by what I saw, and the first time I watched a hardcore video I was definitely disturbed. I would have expected a book like this would explain a few things to me. But no, nothing. A strange omission even back when this book was last revised, but today our kids are looking at porn on-line that would curl your toes all the time and from a much younger age than you would believe. They need a book to set them straight about what they are seeing and why they might want to avoid it.
I bought this for my adopted teen boys. I've used this for years in the comprehensive sexuality course, Our Whole Lives, that I taught for my Unitarian Universalist Fellowship's youth. It's very readable and although it's completeness might put some adults off, it's just what teens need today. We give it to each teen who completes the OWL course.
This book is very helpful for my 10yo daughter. She has always been curious and asks many questions. Having this book around allows her to pick it up freely and read about what other pre-teens/teens feel about a particular topic, about their own bodies, about issues that are still remain important and relevant to pre-teens/teens' lives. She is learning to love her body in a healthy, holistic way. Kudos.
This book is very important. I recommend it to all my friends who are parents. I suggest they read it than pass it on to their pubescent/ adolescent children. It can open an important dialogue between them. The more accurate information about sexuality and life changes parents and their children have the better.
I love books like these; I think they are great resources for students and young adults to learn about their bodies and their sexuality. I highly recommend all books like these, as long as they are diverse and discuss all kinds of topics :)
Great information for teens, covers all those awkward topics and teaches children to be comfortable and responsible with their bodies. Plan on giving it to my daughter on her 12th birthday.
I would recommend this book to every parent with a teen. This book goes in depth on all kinds of subjects teens may have to deal with, and it has comments from teens who had to deal with certain topics in the book. I really like the book and so does my daughter.
An excellent book for the pre-teen, young adolescent to answer questions about their changing bodies.

I was first drawn to THE WHOLE OF MY WORLD because of the cover. Its beautiful simplicity. The colours in the title, the exhilarated girl and that gorgeous tagline, “This is what it feels like to start againâ€. I bought it as soon as it launched. Then I found out it was about football.I don’t hate football. Indifferent or disinterested may be better words to describe how I feel about the sport. I know it - grew up in a large family full of football crazies, split between Collingwood and Essendon. I inherited Essendon. Nevertheless, I never caught the fever, never felt the magic. Also, I’m one of the people who have been turned off the sport because of alleged and reported bad behaviour of players. So this book, dubbed “The football bookâ€, sat in my kindle until Grand Final Day. That morning I read an article written by the author on mamamia.com. It was to encourage women to get into the spirit of the day and watch the game. It didn’t make me want to watch the game, but it made we want to read her book. Immediately. So, as the first ball of the game bounced, I began reading. The first thing I realised was, the book is not about football. As the title and cover promises, it is about so much more. It’s a story that delves deeply into a character’s soul. She carries you on her journey, so close to her heart you feel her every emotion. It is so cleverly done, so beautifully written, I couldn’t stop reading. It reminded me why interests or hobbies such as football, or anything someone feels passionately about, are so important. Having a passion gives someone something to grip hold of, something to dream of, to live for. It can be an escape when life is difficult. I refuse to write spoiling reviews so I will stop there. But, if you have reservations about this book like I did, because you aren’t into football, put them aside and dive in. Reading THE WHOLE OF MY WORLD is an entertaining, uplifting and enriching experience. I loved every minute of it.
On the face of it the books explores traditional themes of growing up, relationships and loss but is unique in that the focus is on Aussie Rules football and the fanatical fans who follow the game. I loved how Shelley (the main character) is a normal teenager (whatever that is) in that she is insecure, has problems at school but also that she is physically strong from playing the game and athletics. She is the equal of the boys in this respect. The book also 'dares' to go into the territory of her falling for one of the players and how this is inappropriate and yet we understand why and are not too condemnatory of him either....perhaps we even feel a little sorry for the guy?And then there is the incident that has defined Shelley and her father's relationship...I particularly identified with the irrationality of being a sports fan...how it's so important despite its lack of importance. Shelley's friend, Tara and her beautifully irrational superstitions are a highlight of the book.Great book for teenagers and adults.
Full disclosure. I know the author. But I never got to read the book before actually purchasing it myself. And it's a terrible position to be in when you read a fellow writer's work and you know, just know, that, being the curmudgeon you are, you're going to have to lie to them a little bit to avoid stomping on their dreams, because it just never happens that the work is that good. Well, more fool me, because The Whole of My World proved to be the work that released me from the quasi-horror of providing peer feedback, it was that good. Beautifully written, funny, moving, a gentle narrative that takes its central characters on transforming journeys, and a very real depiction of an era in not just time, but universal experience. All of this adds up to a sensational debut novel, an absorbing read whether you're the intended audience, or as far away from it as you could be, like I am. Is this high art? No. Nor does it want to be. It's honest and heartfelt, and delivers on every intended level. Seriously do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of The Whole of My World, if not for yourself, then for someone who you know enjoys a good book. And if there are any school curriculum planners out there hunting for that ideal contemporary Australian novel to add to their reading list; you just found it. Congrats, Nicole!
Nicole Hayes' debut is a clever book. It would be easy to think -- a book about football in Australia? How could I relate to that? But sport has always been a fascinating subject for writers: all that passion, all that yearning: it's almost a metaphor for life. So much can go wrong, and so much does for Shelley, the young protagonist of this novel. But like Aussie Rules, life is about living with failures and sadness and learning from them, and this is, for me, what THE WHOLE OF MY WORLD is about: a girl learning to connect and reconnect with the people in her world who really matter: her friends, her bereaved father. So, in short, a novel about growing up and coming to terms with the whole of your world -- including the sad and awful parts in the past. Becoming a young adult, in fact. Hayes is an assured and observant narrator of the whole process.
I read this book on a recommendation, reluctantly.I have to stress that this type of book is so far from the type of novel I normally read that it borders on personal blasphemy. Being a huge fan of Science Fiction and Fantasy, I thought I'd give Nicole's novel a quick glance to be courteous, so I could at least say that I gave it a try. But then something very strange happened....I actually liked it.The writing was so captivating that I had to read on. Nicole's ability to capture emotional dialogue and her relentlessly entertaining witticism, left me helplessly turning pages toward the finish line. I recommend this book for anybody that loves an engaging, humorous and thought provoking read.

#113,120 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
This is a very balanced historical, philosophical, and theological treatment of Islam (its flaws and its good points) considered in itself and in relation to both Christianity and Judaism, by an investigative journalist who has many similar books to his credit, exploring the dynamics of cultural decline and providing a definitive remedy with a good prognosis (if only the recommended treatment were followed).
E. Michael Jones is brilliant and not afraid to speak the truth as he sees it. Rarely will you find another author capable of equaling his combination of deep historical insight and philosophical prowess to current events. Pick up this book and everything else he writes. You won't be disappointed.
Dr. Jones continues to lay out the connections that explain so much of the social and foreign policy choices of the US government in the post war era and the forces driving those policies. Worth a read!
