In my experience, anthologies are always a sort of doing toss with essays being either very good or very bad, due to the fact that its a collection different authors with different ideas and different styles. It's rare to find one where all the essays are great and interesting reads, but this book is one of those. A collection of essays on military history, strategy, and strategies starting with Machiavelli in the 16th century all the way to the end of the Cold War. Every major military leader and thinker in Western history during this time period is there and topics are varied enough so that it is not always Army tactics that are covered. It also includes essays on the Navy and Air power that are fascinating. It even includes a chapter on modern revolutionary wars, or insurgencies as we would call them today, that is not to be missed. And, I have to say, there wasn't one essay that I felt was superfluous or boring., an achievement for an anthology of this size. The only thing that I would say is that, since this was most recently updated in 1986, it does need to add a few new chapters on robotics and cyberwarfare. In spite of its age and length, this was a great read and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the development of modern, Western military strategy over the centuries.
I purchased this book as it was required for USMC Command and Staff Course, but it is a good resource for anyone who wants a selection of articles and pieces from a wide range of time periods who has an interest in military strategy. The book is divided into eras and within each era there are a number of articles. As a result, it is fairly easy to find what you want without a huge hassle. It doesn't go into extreme detail on any one topic or era, but is a great resource for a general overview and enough of an understanding that you feel pretty good about the topic.
This is an outstanding comparative analysis of Clausewitz, Sun Tzu and Mao, and is a great companion volume while reading any of these theorists, but especially Clausewitz. Handel clearly illustrates his analysis by using quotes from the works of the major theorists. The most rewarding parts of the book to me were the sections on the importance of politics to the military commander, moral forces in war as found in Clausewitz, and chapter 9: "The Supreme Act of Judgement: Understanding the Nature of War and the Trinitarian Analysis." This is an essential companion and well worth one's time to read in order to achieve a deeper understanding of Clausewitz beyond a few pithy quotes misapplied.
If you want a comprehensive, concise review of the major thinkers of military strategy, this is THE book to purchase. Each chapter provides a quick bio of the thinker, along with an explanation of the strategy. Chapters flow in chronological order, so you can understand how strategy, tactics and technology developed. Actually an enjoyable book to read, and has become a "ready reference" for me to keep handy.
Great background history for Strategy. The term "Machiavellian" is thrown around a lot by people who don't have a clue who Machiavelli was and what he did for his employers. And that's just one topic. There's a lot of context included in this book.
Updated version of the classic. I appreciate the point of view the writers have on the classic works, in modern examples.

THis is one of the best books for helping a teacher to set up a classroom. It has lists of things to place in areas of your room. It has a great lay out of interest areas. I love the way it reads like a text book, it helps to be straight forward! I really love the fact that it leans more towards a play based center. Great tools also. Such as daily lesson plans and weekly planning forms. If you are just starting out as a Early Childhood teacher or looking for some AMAZING ideas for changing your classroom this is the book you want! It will break down each area in easy to understand and follow chapters. It has helped me with room arrangement ideas! I wsa reminded of things I used to have but phased out and really needed to bring back, open art area, home like feel to the room and lots of added toys to each area.

This was a required book for my wife's ECE (Early Childhood Education) class. It is pretty easy to read and a good resource. Very heavy so watch your back.
A great preschool resource.
This curriculum book manages to cram as much information into its 530 pages as possible. It starts with an overview of child development in chapter one, entitled "How Children Deveop and Learn". Chapter one also introduces and explains what I consider the most exciting aspect of the Creative Curriculum program- the developmental continuum as a tool for tracking children's progress and identifying areas for the program to focus attention. The continuum states a program goal, let's say "knowledge of the alphabet" and then proceeds to state specific examples to help teachers assess how far a child has acheived in meeting that goal, ranging from forerunner skills (child points out that there are letters on their cubby and those letters mean this is the child's cubby) and listing 2 more examples of growing understanding, then ending with a high (for preschool) level of understanding (makes sound-letter connections and demonstrates it by writing a D on a picture they state they want to give to dad). The Creative Curriculum continuum has 50 stated goals coverng all domains of development. I find this tool extremely helpful in general program planning, individualization to meet specific needs of a specific child, and in communicating with parents.The book also has informative chapters regarding setting up the classroom environment and the family-school partnership. This book continues with a chapter on each learning center typically found in an ECE classroom such as the book corner, blocks, and water table. It states items found in that area with suggestions on how to use them and highligting what content areas (literacy, math skills, social skills, etc.)are addressed. The other thing I am also particularly pleased with this book is how it repeatedly reinforces how Early Childhood Educators assist children in furthering their understanding through teacher-child discussions,teacher modeling, and posing open questions such as "I wonder what will happen if you...?" Children are not just left to their own devises in a "safe and interesting environment." The majority of learning occurs with people interacting with each other.I even find the planning forms helpful, and I usually prefer to make up my own things like that.Overall, a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate approach to teaching small children. Highly Recommended.

Wonderful selection in the Flicka, Ricka and Dicka series! I have purchased this for all grandchildren -- one is now a college student and the least one is two. They all love it. The 50 year old daughter still remembers it with affection, as do I, when my German Mother borrowed it from the library. As a librarian, I purchased most of the books in the series for each library, be it children's or elementary. Even the boys liked the triplets including Snipp, Snapp and Snurr!.
I remember these from my childhood and wanted to share with my granddaughters. They love the book and can read it.
My 80 yr old mom read this as a little girl and when I presented it to her she almost cried! Same story she so fondly remembers. Priceless!!

Flicka, Ricka, Dicka books have been republished. The classic Swedish stories from the 1930s bring wonderful tales of three Swedish sisters and their adventures together. Charming and always have a sweet lesson. Classic drawings will make it fun to read and discuss with children of this generation.
Aside from the great illustrations, the book tells a touching story about helping the less fortunate. My daughters, 4 &7 both enjoyed it. Will certainly be getting more from the series.

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati is one of the best books we've read in the Encounter the Saints series. We knew very little about this saint before reading it, so it was a treasure to learn so much about him. The book follows his life from his birth until his death, detailing important events from childhood to young adulthood. Our favorite parts were his interactions with his family and the sacrifices he made for them. This amazing saint was not only an incredible sportsman, but carved out time DAILY to pray and visit the poor. The author makes Bl. Pier Giorgio come alive as someone whom you would be friends with in real life and indeed, he is now our true friend in Heaven. This book works well as a read-aloud; I read it aloud to my children. They couldn't wait for the next chapter!
This book fits a perfect bill of a love-hate relationship. There are things I absolutely LOVE about the book, and several things that I hated.First off, the book, overall, has an excellent message which was thought provoking even to me as an adult: How we really ought to love more deeply and take care of those around us, especially the poor. Namely, to have charity as Christ would. So that is the great thing about the book that I absolutely love; you can rise to the book and come away from it inspired to do more. It had a great effect on me, and inspired me to look into the life of Frassati even more.But the negative aspect of it I could have done without. My first pet peeve was when the book stated that the Frassati children were lonely BECAUSE they were taught at home and were not allowed to go to school. Okay, so as a homeschooler that really irritated me. It irritated me even further when I researched the saint and I couldn't find anything in regards to them not having friends at a young age because they were homeschooled... rather it was the parents that didn't want them having outside friends that was the problem. Minor thing, a little white out took care of that! LOLBut the whole middle section of the book seemed to pit Frassati against his parents, left and right. Now I know that his parents were well-known to be harsh and he grew up in a hard family. However, it seemed there should have been lots of things you could have focused on in a children's book... and this would be at the very bottom of my list to include, or at least highlight the obedience of Frassati to his parents rather than how wrong they constantly were. After all, especially in a Catholic book, children should be ENCOURAGED to be obedient... this commandment of God and Church is difficult for them and thus I don't appreciate it when a book encourages their sinful nature rather than their good. So keep this in mind when you are considering the book!Overall, I still think it is an excellent book. I just had to heavily edit parts of it so the kids can get an excellent story without the negative. Since this wasn't a Jr. High or High school book, they really should have been more careful in what they put in it. However, I still have to recommend the book, especially with supervision and reading it with them, it would be a great book to have on hand.Boys in particular should really love the story of Blsd. Frassati. He had a very active life and was quite the young man!
This was the second book about Pier Giorgio Frassati that I have read this year. The other was Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati: An Ordinary Christian by Maria Amata Di Lorenzo. Both are excellent reads but there were a few stories in this book written for children that really inspired me and my son. My family and I love this series. And the example of Pier Giorgio is an incredible story of faith and service. And his live serves as an example to us all.As a family we loved this series and this specific book. The Encounter the Saints Series, from Pauline Books and Media, and consider them excellent reads. The series is written for younger readers, but they are so well written it can be appreciated by anyone who wants to grow in knowledge of a specific saint or learn from the examples of the 37 saints in the series to date. I really enjoy reading these books with my children, but need to be upfront and say I am well ahead of them in working my way through the series because I just cannot put them down. I am hoping to read more about this saint and loved this volume. There are currently 37 books in this series, including The Saints Pray for Us. I have read a number of these books on my own and also about half of them with my children. My oldest who is 11 can read them to us. She has read them to me and also helped me read them to the younger children. My son who is 9 can read them with some help on the more difficult words, but he really enjoys just listening to these powerful stories. My youngest who is 6 loved the story, and while reading this one held her pink play sword. This book is part of the Encounter the Saints Series; from Pauline Books and Media, and this book is an incredible read as is the entire series! Our family gives them five stars.

I could spend the rest of my life knitting patterns from this lovely book. It is a feast for the eyes. The English translation is excellent. Especially helpful are the beginning notes that explain how Japanese charts differ. Take the time to absorb these differences. All patterns are presented in chart form. It takes a bit of time for the eye and mind to decipher the symbols. I spent an evening studying the formation of the symbols and layout in the Guide in the front of the book. That was time well spent. It “clicked†and made sense. Now my mind is full of ideas for scarves, mittens, socks and garments. It would be helpful to draw from previous experience in knitting cables, lace and twisted stitches - so I would not recommend this book for beginners. This book will remain out on the coffee table. It is far too lovely to hide away on the bookshelf.
I got this book yesterday after returning from a knitting tour of Ireland. I was exhausted, but couldn't put the book down. The designs are wonderful from simple to very intricate. My mind is spinning with ideas and I am anxious to swatch them out. The charting is going to take some time to get used to, as some of the symbols are a little different from what I usually knit from. There are no written instructions per row, only the charts. I can't see doing these designs in any other way. The chart symbols are cross referenced to the design pages. The book is divided into chapters, each with its own small project: Lacy Patterns, Overall Patterns and Crossing Stitches, Pattern Panels, Pattern Arrangements, Round Yokes and Edgings. The photography is excellent, each photo showing the design that is charted. This is a must have book for anyone who enjoys designing their own knits, loves texture and is a stitch pattern enthusiast. This is not a book for knitters who don't like charts. Extremely reasonable price for what you receive. Don't pass this one up!
Completely useless as a Kindle book. I'm sure it's very nice in print, but not worth anything on Kindle. The charts don't scale with your screen so you can't read them and it references additional charts by page number which is not integrated with Kindle. It's completely unusable. I was very disappointed.
As a knitter and also as a fan of Japanese culture and Japan in general, I knew I had to have this book. I had been trying for some time to find more on the web about Japanese stitches, and I did find bits and pieces but nothing with a good, solid foundation from which to start. So, even though I have been quite disappointed with the majority of new knitting books I've recently purchased, I was cautiously optimistic that this volume would in fact be just what I was hoping -- and when it arrived, my hopes were met and well exceeded!Enclosed in this softcover, oversized book are quite a few new and unusual stitches, as well as a multitude of stitch patterns that are far more complex than most any Western knitter is accustomed to seeing. Some patterns even include crochet mixed into the knitting! Stitch patterns and even single stitch "groups" can be complex: some, such as the "double decrease right over purl", are complicated enough that instead of explaining the symbol inline, Shida-sensei provides step-by-step, illustrated instructions later in the volume. After explaining the symbols, the remainder of the book is dedicated to stitch patterns, primarily large repeats (50 sts x 48 rows, for example) of interspersed lace and cables which look absolutely stunning. No enthusiastic knitter can possibly browse through them without wanting to immediately try them all.I would recommend this book only for knitters with more than a little experience knitting both cables and lace, and only those very comfortable working from charts. In general, Japanese knitting patterns do not include written instructions, only charts. This volume is no exception. Many, perhaps most, of the stitch symbols included on the charts here do not have equivalent US/Western chart symbols because the stitches simply do not exist in traditional Western knitting. Some of them are easy to conceive of, like adding increases and decreases to a cable stitch to create a lacy cable. Such stitches are not entirely foreign to you if you've read Barbara Walker's Charted Knitting Designs: A Third Treasury of Knitting Patterns or something similar. Others, however, such as Shida-sensei's lift-over and wrapped knot stitches may be entirely new to most knitters confronted with them for the first time.Shida-sensei also provides a selection of "basic" and "arrangement" stitch patterns which show options for modifying the patterns in various ways to create something entirely original to your project. Finally, a sampling of round yokes and a small selection of patterns for complete projects are included at the end (remember: charts and basic steps only, no row-by-row instructions), but the majority of the book is dedicated to stitch patterns without doubt.In summary, experienced and advanced intermediate knitters will find plenty -- tons! -- of new stitch patterns in Shida-sensei's most excellent collection of Japanese stitch patterns. There are enough patterns here to keep you knitting for at least a year or two without knitting the same pattern twice. But I would again caution any knitter who doesn't feel confident in lace and cable knitting to instead gain more experience in those first, and then come back to this treasure afterward. One final caution: Because many of these stitch patterns include such large repeats, they will likely look best in sport weight or lighter yarn. If you are a knitter who prefers to work in DK and heavier yarn, you will probably be dissatisfied with these patterns. It would not be possible to make most types of projects using these patterns with heavier yarn and still get the sizing right. A scarf with a 50-st repeat in even DK weight yarn would be rather wide, don't you think? :)

As the owner of dozens of knitting books, I'm not easily impressed with another new knitting book but "Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible" is an absolute treasure. I promise you've never seem anything like these exquisite patterns before in the US! The pattern on the front alone is worth the very modest price of the book (I paid less than $12.00). The patterns are all in chart form and there is a clear and concise guide to the charts and symbols. The book arrived yesterday and I'm longing to abandon all my Christmas projects in process to start exploring a new pattern with needles and wool. Treat yourself! You won't regret it, I promise. Just think - 260 never-before-seen stitch patterns to inspire and thrill you!
Wow ... so worth waiting for this one! I ordered this in April, a little wary of pre-ordering a knitting book since so often they are NOT as good as expected. I am so happy I did! this is one for every knitter to have in their resource library as the stitch patterns, panels, etc are so amazingly executed and unique.This book is packed with stitch patterns and stitch-designs (as well as intuitive directions for creating your own unique patterns) that are amazing .. gorgeous ... can't say enough good things.If you design your own hand-knits (as I do) or just want to try some different knit stitches .. this is the book for you. This book is ALL charts ... so well-worth your while to learn to knit from charts.ENJOY!
