This book addresses many of the things we all need to start rethinking and considering as it pertains to the damage that religion, very wrong religion has done to us as people. I was informed I should not read this book, in my mind reading one book was not going to change my position in my love for God and people. I am absolutely glad I read this book and plan on reading it again many times!Questions that any person would have as they mature in relationship with the Most High are throughout this book. Good stuff!!
This book makes me want to go back to church. I had served in church leadership for years and stopped when I moved out of state because the idea of going back into a fellowship of exclusion was too painful and against everything I believed Christ taught. This book made me cry in relief and has opened the door of possible future attendance at church again. I will be looking for one that is open and accepting. I am so grateful that I read this. I loved how Pastor Carlson used the bible to support the message of inclusion. This book truly is an answer to prayer!
It's not one persons take on the Gospel. In fact it's really not grounded in Christian theology. Pearson uses a theology of Universalism to describe universal grace, a common mistake. The book exposes its readers to the concepts of Universalism as taught in the vein of Unitarian-ish teachings using terms like "Christ Consciousness" while the meaning is really not at all like Christ in the gospels. Having said that it is an easy read and if you want to gain a wider perspective of Universalism this book will give you one perspective. It's evident Pearson is attempting to bring forth a unique theological view while sort of "dancing" outside any particular religious system or denomination including outside Unitarian Universalists. I think this book would be a great read for intro to world religions course.
The book was based on truths that are biblical. The world needs to know and understand the transforming power of Love. We are indeed free, but only according to what we believe.
I came to Christ at the age of 16 when I started dating my now husband of 40 years. Sadly so many things I began 'learning ' about Christianity didn't witness deep within my non-churched spirit, but I followed my boyfriend and his religious family's lead. I would question how a loving God could create a forever he'll. I felt dirty when my Christian boyfriend always wanted premarital sex. How was he different from other teenage boys? Five years ago the scripture , Romans 5:17, resonated with me. I never got on my knees to confess I was a sinner because I was born a sinner because of Adam's sin yet it was necessary for me to confess my salvation??? Was Adam's sin more powerful than Jesus's redemptive act, I questioned, in that I was born a sinner but had to ask to be saved?? No!!! Just as I was born a sinner through Adam's fall, I'm also born again (without having to ask) through Christ's more powerful act of death on the cross to abolish sin, without having to ask. IT IS FINISHED!!
This book is a must read for anyone who is open-minded enough to consider that there are many teachings about our religions, beliefs and practices that need to be challenged and looked at through the lens of TRUTH and what makes the most sense. Bishop Pearson has taken the time and challenged himself to "follow the evidence where it leads." If we read his book with an open mind, we will see that the evidence is clearly taking us away from much of what we've been told and taught for centuries.
All I can say is Mr. Pearson is wrong. This is what the late Billy Graham had to say about hell:"Yes, Jesus did talk about the reality of hell — in fact, He talked about it more than any other person in the Bible. He warned, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell†(Matthew 10:28).Did He say this simply to scare us? The reality of hell should frighten us, because not one word in the Bible about hell would ever make you want to go there — not if you take it seriously. The Bible speaks of hell as a place of absolute loneliness and despair and hopelessness. It calls it a place of “darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth†(Matthew 22:13).But Jesus didn’t talk about hell just to scare us. He talked about it instead because He wanted us to know that God has provided a way of escape! Listen: God doesn’t want you to be separated from Him forever. He loves you, and He wants you to spend eternity with Him in heaven. Unlike hell, heaven is a place of joy and peace and freedom from all the fears and pains of this world. Who wouldn’t want to go there?Don’t gamble with your soul, and don’t turn your back on Jesus. Instead, by faith turn to Christ and commit your life to Him. He alone gives us hope — hope for today, and hope for eternity."
Pearson describes in perfect detail and accuracy what I have been believing my whole adult life about the truth of God's unconditional love for ALL of humanity! I rejoice in every chapter in his beautiful and heartfelt testimony to his spiritual awakening, and so very grateful that he has shared this with us in this book. Thank you Mr. Carlton Pearson!
