About 80% of this book is an excellent outline of Templar history, ideology and structure. But when it deals with the trial of the Templars and the slanders of King Philip The Fair concerning the Templar initiation ceremony, the author (unlike most serious scholars of today) makes no attempt whatsoever to debunk Philip's claims. I was quite surprised by this. Her motives are a mystery to me. The Templar initiation ceremony was a CHRISTIAN ritual devoid of any perversion or blasphemy. No serious student of Templar history believes a single word of Philip's disgusting attack on the Order. This author repeats these vile slanders in her book 'The Templars and the Shroud of Turin." Her only footnoted sources for these slanders are her own books!!!...DISGRACEFUL

I thoroughly enjoyed this account of the Templar history. First, I least enjoyed the difficulty I experienced following the narrative. Maps and diagrams might have been helpful as events moved back and forth between the Christian and Muslim lands and principal characters. Most satisfying however, was an ultimate understanding of their successes, failures and who these men and their enemies were, at home and abroad. Fascinating was the degree of research used by the author, representing centuries of documentation, much of it first hand chronicles stored in the Vatican archives. Through this treasure trove of written history recorded during a period of over a dozen Crusades, some of this history discovered during the book‘s writing, one begins to understand the mission, dedication, leadership and uncommon character of these warrior monks. The Templars brought these virtues to bear during a time when they were none too common.

This is not an exciting book weaving together history, mystery and conspiracy. There is no conspiracy at all, and the only mystery here stems from the same sources as all other things that remain mysterious to us concerning the period from the fall of Rome to the Renaissance; the lack of adequate historical documentation from the period. As it turns out the Order Templars existed for 190 years from 1120 until 1310. They had a beginning, a rise to zenith which ran on for about 100 years, and then a slow decline the result (as often happens) of their own success along with the changing political landscape around them, followed by their complete dismantling (mostly by the evil machinations of the French King coupled with the weakness of the Pope) in the first decade of the 14th Century. This is not a gripping book, but it comes across as an accurate book and tells the story in enough detail to fill in many unknowns without becoming bogged down in scholarly reference. A good and easy read, the straight down the middle story of the order and any further writing whether of the historical or fictional sort should at least take this excellent historical investigation into account.

A short history of the Knights of the Templar, covering their creation during the 1st Crusade until their final demise at the hands of King Phillip of France. This is totally a political history. There is no coverage of any of the battles fought by the Templars during the Crusades. The main feature of this history is the discovery of documentation that the Templar’s had been cleared of heresy by the Church just before King Phillips purge of the order.Nice introduction into the history of the Templars.

As a fan of historical fiction, the Knights Templar have frequently filled the pages being read. I confess that such historical fiction is enjoyable, but after reading this book, any reader will come away with a new appreciation for the effort put forth to produce this work. “Exhaustive research” is a claim used so often to legitimize someone’s work that until this book is read, a casual reader has no idea of the extent of research that warrants such a descriptor. A new understanding of the Templar story, for this reader, was like an epiphany and kudos to Frale for her effort.

Not sure what was so secret. Most of what was written has been covered in other works and is not that surprising. The Roman Catholic Church political structure was/is very convoluted and full of back room intrigue. Truly it mirrors the secular world and the Templars (warrior monks) are like a frat with a few more guidelines, and harsher penalties. The fact that the Pope was impotent in dealing with the Royal secular powers who placed themselves above the Pope, is not new or necessarily surprising.

Barbara Frale hits a home run with this interesting and revealing book. Many religious histories are as dry as toast and contain endless unnecessary details meant to impress the reader with the author's scholarship. Frale obviously knows of what she writes and makes it entertaining as well as informative. This book was an amazingly fast read and I came away with a new appreciation for the Templars.

I gave the book four stars because I felt the author deserved it. With the best intentions these men were enlisted and volunteered to do good..Unfortunately it turned out to be not so good for any of them after the last Crusades proved detrimental to their existences. This partly at the behest of the Papacy which did a lot more damage in general. I liked this book because it gave me additional knowledge about their history. The existence of orders in today's society in various countries was new to me as I did not know such organizations still functioned. I would recommend the book to educators, and anyone interested in the history of the European continent in the pre/post Holy Roman Empire era.
