This is such an interesting read! Full of historical facts, this novel is well worth reading despite numerous typographical errors. Although that was a point of irritation, the humor woven throughout the storyline is worth every misspelling, typo and grammatical flaw. I found myself openly laughing and reading comic passages to family members who might listen! The Silk Road refers to the ancient trade route from China to Jerusalem. The book covers the religions, politics, customs and traditions of most of the world in the thirteenth century.I think I most enjoyed reading the absurdities espoused by William, the Pope's ambassador, and his overzealousness in Christian fervor. The Templar Knight tasked to protect this priest is priceless in his thoughts, opinions and dialogue as he travels the Silk Road route with the priest who has a bull from the Pope for the Khan of Khans and charged with bringing the Tartars into "the fold of Christianity as the " only true religion " as God's vassal. The fact that romance has been added to the story us just icing on the cake. I loved the book for all its history and ancient geography and customs. The Tartar tribes and Mongolian history is facinating. I highly recommend to women's history, history, ancient history and fiction romance genres.
This is the story of a man who became a knight Templar because of a wrong he had done, and a Dominican priest who was traveling on orders from the Pope to go to the Great Kahn and convert him to Christianity. The knight was given orders to accompany and protect the priest, who was an obnoxious human being.Along the way they meet Tatars, nomadic tribes who live along the Silk Road. One of the tribes has a young woman, the daughter of a local Kahn, who outdoes her brothers in all activities. She's assigned to guide them towards their meeting with the Great Kahn. The book illustrates the great hardships travelers had in traveling in what is now probably Mongolia and China. It was interesting to me in that respect. Not being Catholic, nor from the Middle Ages, I found it very hard to understand how William, the Dominican, could actually think he could walk into another culture and expect their king to suddenly convert to Christianity. His attitude, as well as the Knight Josseran, about their faith was probably typical of their time, and portrayed well, but left me cold. There is a side story of a developing romance between the knight and the princess who is their guide. Of course her father doesn't want that to happen. It's all fairly chaste.
This book surprised me by how much I enjoyed it. I’m picky about historical fiction, even though it’s a genre I enjoy, it’s an easy one to do badly, and the Crusades are not my favorite time period. But “Silk Road,†my first encounter with Colin Falconer’s fiction, surprised me with the complexity of the characters, the depictions of their suffering, their rationalizing doing things that go against their beliefs. The story feels very human in that way and this is something consistent in Falconer’s work, regardless of the debate of research in some of Falconer's other books. I’m of the opinion that one should expect certain liberties when the word “fiction†is attached to the word “historical.â€Even the characters who work against Josseran are easy to empathize with, and some of the scenes are so beautifully rendered that they will linger for a long time. (Warning: Spoilers) Such as when Father William gets lost in the desert and believes he’s picking up rubies, only to find they are nothing but rocks. Or when Josseran pushes his horse over the ledge to win the race that will allow him to marry the woman he loves. Or when a virgin gives birth to a child that is not allowed to be born. This work feels very visceral and real and has a way of drawing readers back into that time, holding them there with bated breath, anxious to see what happens next. The only negative thing I have to say is that personally I had a difficult time physical reading this story. Finally I used the text-to-speech feature on Kindle and that worked like a charm; I was hooked. So if this is the case, readers should try this before giving up. I downloaded the narrator with an English accent and that helped a lot too for some reason. (I’m American, so maybe it just sounded more exotic or something lol). But I liked this work and will definitely be on the lookout for more historical fiction by this author.
