Amazon.com Review
"I got skinny on fat," claims Suzanne Somers. It sounds too good to be true--a weight-loss program that lets you "eat incredible, rich foods in abundant portions while the unwanted pounds effortlessly melt away." Most nutritionists would cringe at the idea that people trying to lose weight don't need to restrict their dietary fat, but Suzanne Somers and her "Somercizers" insist it works. Fat (even saturated fat) isn't the enemy, she claims--it's "products loaded with sugar, white flour, hydrogenated oils, and chemicals and preservatives that replace real fats." Get Skinny on Fabulous Food follows Somers's Eat Great, Lose Weight with a recap of the Somersize program, which involves eliminating "funky foods" like sugar and starch and using a type of food combining. Also included are grateful letters from followers of the program, menu suggestions, and 150 new recipes. Recipes include such fat-filled dishes as Leslie's Mushroom Broccoli and Egg Cupcakes (with butter, oil, Swiss cheese, and nine large eggs), Beef Stroganoff (with butter, oil, and two cups of heavy cream), Ginger Creme Brûlée (with butter, heavy cream, nine large egg yolks, and even the enemy: sugar), Cappuccino Chocolate Chunk Cheesecake (with cream cheese, eggs, chocolate, sour cream, and--yup--sugar). No calorie counts or nutritional breakdowns are included. --Joan Price

In this sequel to her Eat Great, Lose Weight (LJ 12/96), television actress Somers modifies her previous approach to include fats, admitting that, in moderate amounts, they are necessary for good health. She is still adamant about sugar and still posits that the proper food combinations can enhance the foods' nutritive values. She rightly points out that "fat free" does not mean that foods aren't fattening. Sugar is still a prime contributor to obesity, and Somers also blames white flour and other so-called "funky" foods. Her basic ideaAthat some fats are necessaryAis sound, and though the rest of her theory is rather shaky, half the book is devoted to fabulous recipes. Unlike most diet recipes, these include olive oil, butter, and sour cream. Skip the pseudo-science and go directly to the good stuff. Bon appetit!ASusan B. Hagloch, Tuscarawas Cty. Suzanne Somer's program is a little like Whole 30, but you're allowed dairy. Some of this is mostly common sense (like cutting out sugar). It does seem like good advice, and I especially think that not combining carbs with fats is a good one. It would cut way down on the bloating some of us experience after meals. A couple of things, though. One, I know it is a lifestyle and not a diet, but she doesn't really give a time frame for how long you are supposed to be in Phase 1. I guess it is different for everybody, but I would kind of like to know how long I'm supposed to be in Phase 1. The other thing is, fruit. Fruit, I know it's natural, but it has tons of sugar. She even has a whole paragraph where she talks about her husband liking fruit so much that she thought it was the reason for his weight gain and possibly high cholesterol. But fruit is allowed (albeit by itself) so it is kind of contradicting. The other thing, Ms. Somers talks about how you can have butter and stuff but she herself chooses olive oil and less fattening versions. It can be a little confusing so you have to be good at kind of doing some guesswork. Overall it was an enjoyable book. I've known about this program since junior high, so I can't wait to finally try it.
I will NEVER be fat again. This is such a delicious way to lose weight. It's not even like being on a diet at all.I'm already down 13 pounds. My goal was to be down 15 pounds. I've never lost weight this fast. I love this book.It is a must read for anyone who wants to lose weight and see results quickly.
I must admit that I don't have very much weight to lose, but it was becoming very difficult to kick those 7 pounds that had crept up on me in my mid-thirties. I was religiously following calorie-counting, even though I've read that "a calorie is NOT a calorie." I knew that my sugar addiction needed to be kicked if I were to get anywhere on a diet, and calorie counting was not helping me.I saw Suzanne on a red carpet interview, and it reminded me that she had had a diet come out in the 90s. I decided to order her book, and I'm so glad I did.I've lost over 4 pounds in a week and a half, and I'm almost over my sugar cravings. Her recipes are DELICIOUS and so rich. So far I've only made her pork tenderloin and halibut with tomato-basil sauce, but they have been a hit in our household. My one-year old even loves them.
I am tired of al the latest nutrition/diet books that are impossible to follow if you have as normal life in the Real World. I found an old Somersize book of mine and I thought "Why did I ever stop this?" It is delicious, easy and flexible in our world. You do have to cook, but you always know you're getting fresh, good food. You are what you eat, and Suzanne had made that abundantly clear. Thank You, Suzanne, for showing us this Way of Eating!
Suzanne Somer's eating concepts are life savers for those of us who gain weight eating the recommended low fat diets, or those of us who were raised on processed Velveeta, Twinkies and white bread. Somers is a gourmet cook who provides excellent recipes, great advice and lots of encouragement. To top it off, her eating plan is a medical miracle. My blood pressure went from 142/96 to 110/64 in the first three weeks of eating meat, cheese, cream, and eggs with all the fat left in, and now hovers in the 100/60 range. I lost 10 pounds quickly, and am now steadily losing a pound or two a week. I can eat all I want of rich, delicious foods.I've tried all the other eating plans. Forget them! Go with Suzanne.
I wrote a review about 8 months ago - have maintained my weight - am able to eat some "funky" foods and unfortunately I don't exercise so it is all maintained by food combining. I find it easy to do and we eat out quite a bit. I don't follow the recipes - just eat plain. The big joy of this past 6 months was buying a whole new wardrobe of size 8 and 10 pants (putting the size 12 with elastic waists in a box--never to be worn again. i hope) My sister has been following the program for about 5 months and is also pleased with her results. My husband gained back a little weight as he had to go off the program when on a trip where there were "set meals". So as a family, we are firmly into this program. The big thing is to eat a balanced diet during the day...fruits, protein, fats, carbos, veggies. Therefore it is healthy -- it is the combining that keeps the weight off. I never feel deprived because I can eat every few hours if I want to - and eat as much food as I wish. At holiday meals, I ate funky food, but immediately went back to Level I for a day or two. The rest of the time I am a Level Two person.
I was hopeful this book would be "it". I'm sold on the concept but there are no menus in the book. There are recipes...but no actual menus. I do better with sample days to pick and choose different meals. I just found it too hard to follow without any idea what a normal day looks like and how would I incorporate restaurants etc. Maybe I need more hand holding than other people but the lack of sample days just killed it for me.
Suzanne's book has been a wonderful discovery for me. It is so easy to follow her very normal food plan, and the weight just seems to come off so quickly. Please, try her plan, and you will feel better and look better.
