I've read this book twice in my lifetime. Once in my 20's and now in my 30's. I must say that my opinion of the book has drastically changed. In my 20's I saw Gottlieb as being a bitter, aging woman who had "free-choiced" herself into a corner and had created this manifesto of her regrets in an attempt to gain some insight of what went wrong.Now in my 30's I can say that I have opened my mind up to this philosophy and gained a Fiance as a result. I stumbled upon this book again on last year after a date with a man I swore I would never see again. He was nice and all, but just not my type. We'd met over Facebook, exchanged numbers, and after admiring his cute profile pix and engaging in conversation that I can only describe as somewhat chemical, we decided to meet. As soon as I approached the restaurant door where he was waiting on our date, I just knew that this was something I didn't want. My Fiance is fat with man hips and boobs. That was a no-no! He smiled excessively and ordered corn-on-the-cob that he nervously ate throughout the date. I could also go on about his ripped jeans and beat-up hoodie (that he didn't take off at the table!)I had been "Catfished." I went home thinking, "Well, back to the drawing board."A couple of days after the date as I was sitting there thinking of some of the things we (He and I) had discussed leading up to the date; I actually started to miss him. That night I began reading "Marry Him: The Case..." What Gottlieb had to say now began to sound crystal clear. For some reason it resonated in a way that it hadn't before. I texted my Guy again and we began conversing and eventually he asked me out on a second date. It wasn't chemistry on that date either; just a deep curiosity. However, as we began to date again and again...and again. I slowly began to fall in love with this man. Now, I don't notice the hips or weight anymore. I just see his beautiful smile and skin, and the amazing way he loves me. I helped him improve his wardrobe and he (by his own undertaking) is on a quest for better health.What I gathered from Gottlieb is that women will sometimes discredit a man because he doesn't fit into our pre-defined mold of how he should look, talk, or act. We are sold the bill of good on Cinderella and although we'd care not to admit, we struggle with being shallow and presumptuous. I can only say in my case, I never saw myself as wanting a perfect guy, but all the while in the back of my mind that is exactly what I was waiting on. We are all human with HUGE flaws. The quicker we recognize this truth, the quicker we are to embrace what life has to offer. A real relationship is going to be more than being swept off your feet and romanced by a dream, it will be service, understanding, and more importantly compromise. It will have to be about them (and vice-versa) in order to have anything lasting.I plead with single women of today not to judge or be fearful of the message of this book but instead to embrace the positive and open their hearts. I can say that I have NO regrets. Real love is an amazing feeling that all should have the opportunity to experience.
Take this book with a grain of salt. It's hard to do. At first I completely freaked out at the fact that Gottlieb is right, it does get harder for women to date as they get older and the pool starts getting smaller. You think, all the good ones are gone and what's left are the Peter Pans who will waste your youth and then marry someone younger once they decide the timing is finally right for them. Which is somewhat true. I'm getting closer to 30 and I'm so glad I read this book. Take this away: truly think of what your non negotiables and stick with finding someone who has those in common. I just started dating again and at first I went for the fun flake (only lasted 3 dates) and then to the nice guy who I thought..ah, I'll give him a chance. We ended up dating for almost 2 months and recently mutually ended things because something was still missing...but it taught me how nice it was to have someone reliable to date. He never had me waiting around. He called every night. We planned things in advance. We went on fun dates, not just to bars. Usually it's make loose plans on Tuesday to hang out Thursday and then hear from them Thursday at 4pm...we still on for tonight? I didn't have the heart pounding, waiting around, what did I do or say wrong last time feeling. It was such a relief. So I'm going to continue to give all types of guys chances unless I truly think they're a serial killer. I'm taking away so many positives from this previous relationship and am really happy I spent more time in the relationship instead of running on the 3rd date because he told a lame story. I never thought of myself as a shallow dater but it is easy, for some reason, to have something stupid distract you from a great person. The charming guys who gave me immediate butterflies were always great....but so far, none of them committed to me. I do think there needs to be an obvious balance of attraction and things in common...but ladies, one bit of advice, don't become screwed up and bitter over some guy who doesn't make you feel secure in the relationship. You're just going to screw yourself over from finding a nice guy once you start dating again because you're still bitter and hurt. It took me a while to shake off my previous insecurities from a past relationship, but you have to do it. You have to make yourself vulnerable and open. It sucks and is hard. But law of attraction is a real deal thing. Once I was in a better place, I started getting asked out way more. Same hairstyle, same face, same weight...anyway. This book made me do a lot of soul searching which I didn't realize I needed. It makes you face your fears by dealing with reality. Don't lose hope, but don't be stupid and waste your time with the wrong type of person.

After reading this book, I have a thorough understanding of XSLT 2.0. I was really surprised that it covered the Sarissa API, which I use extensively and is also used by other APIs such as MapBuilder.Though it says 2.0, 1.0 is covered in the book too, although not specifically. The code in the first 200 pages (and probably more) works with 1.0 as long as you change the namespace references and fix your own typos.The thing about the community is that most of the XSLT in use is in browsers and is still version 1.0, so 2.0 info isn't useful - yet, though it is covered well in this book.This book got me up and running with detail in a few days. The explanations and the chapters flow nicely. I liked that it didn't read like a PhD dissertation. Good job Jeni.Sam
I've been trying to learn XSLT literally for years, and I always seemed to get hung up on the notion of exactly what constitutes a "template" in XSLT-speak, and (to a lesser extent) some of the ins and outs of XPath. The bottom line is that, for some reason -- I don't know why, and I don't care -- everything snapped into focus with Jeni Tennison's book, and I was able to start coding some practical tools that we're using at the office now. The book is billed as an XSLT 2 intro, and it does have a lot of good stuff on XSLT 2, but I found it a very good reference as well for someone just trying to learn XSLT and basic XPath generally. You should only come to the book if you're already reasonably comfortable with markup languages and creating well-formed XML, but of course you probably wouldn't be reading this if you weren't . . .
I highly recommended the edition of this book that caters for XSLT 1.0 and thats where the problem of this book lies. The author uses the same base material and examples but doesn't highlight the differences for XSLT 2.0. To those who say didn't I see the word Beginning in the title, yes, Beginning XSLT 2.0 there are vast changes between the versions and the Beginner tag can still be applicable to experienced XSLT 1.0 developers migrating to XSLT 2.0. Those who try to do so are ill served by this book. Buy Sal Mangano's XSLT Cookbook 2nd edition instead.
Good book for advanced programmers; could use additional examples of how to use the XSLT tags and functions; would make this an excellent book
Good reference - clear, lots of examples, good index
This book is pretty good about explaining XSL. My one complaint is that the author focuses a little too much on a British soap opera in her examples. Sure it works as an example, but when your demographic is mostly male and American why would you choose a television show directed towards British females? (Of course I know why, but it simply doesn't make sense thinking of marketing.)
This book does not start with actually teaching XSLT. Chpt1 is called Beyond HTML (no XSLT) Chpt2 is about XML, Chpt3 is creating HTML from XML (see what I am getting at, SHOW ME THE XSLT!). After getting this book I actually immediately ordered Sams Teach Yourself XSLT in 21 Days because I know from experience these books get you right into the subject matter and get you going. However this book will be valuable due to it's broad and detailed scope if you have 6 months time to eventually digest it all. At times it is overly wordy on insignificant matter and instead of building on simple examples as you progress the author uses a complete TV guide right off the start which I find to be quite complex to start teaching people!
I suggest this book to all intermediate developers.The organization of the book focus topics from basic xml to dynamic application using xslt.Each topic is followed by another in a natural way, making you learning step by step.Personally i like how the book is organized: a feature is followed by a small example just to give you an idea of how it works, some notes about the caveats and a summary to read while revisiting the book later.This is how books should be organized not as a mere cut & paste from online ref doc as some books did.Highly recommended if you want to learn xslt and xpath quickly but in an effective way.

Teaching Across Cultures is an enjoyable read. Plueddemann writes with a fluid style incorporating personal experience with academic insight. His examination of high and low context, high and low power distance and high and low tolerance for ambiguity makes this book a must-have for anyone who teaches (whether in a cross-cultural setting or not). I have seen cultural blindness to these issues cause mission endeavours to fail. Missionary sending agencies should make Plueddemann's book required reading.
"Teaching Across Cultures" is a good title for anyone teaching people of different backgrounds. Around 150 pages, the book addresses many topics, including:1. Teaching objectives to be reached.2. Meeting cultural expectations as you teach.3. Differing values across many cultures.4. Dealing with human nature, educational content, and educational aims.5. Various struggles encountered when teaching in different cultures.Many other topics are addressed. The title is easy to read, flows smoothly from chapter to chapter, and is a handy reference for anyone interested in the topics. Will be used again, especially since people of many different cultures live in my area. Helps not only in teaching, but also in better understanding people and their cultures. I was given a review copy by IVP Academic in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.
James E. Plueddemann (hereafter JEP) has taught at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and Wheaton College. His fields include missions and educational ministries.As the title indicates, this book is about teaching in different cultures. Of course, there is the problem that one culture may not understand another culture’s idioms, and teachers should be aware of that. But, as JEP demonstrates, different cultures also have their own propensities when it comes to education. Some emphasize lecturing, whereas others stress discussion. Some dislike ambiguity, whereas others have no problem with it. Some regard the teacher as authoritative and the students dare not challenge him or her in class, whereas others have a more informal relationship between teachers and students. Some are individualistic, whereas others are collective. Some are more rigid than others.Part of this book is about teachers becoming more sensitive to their audiences so that they can teach them more effectively. But JEP also presents his own ideas about what education should look like. For JEP, simply passing down information and testing students on it does not really teach them anything. They can easily forget what they “learned†after taking the test. They are more likely to retain information as a result of problem solving, or if the material is related to their own life. Moreover, when it comes to teaching Christianity in a religious context, education should be not only about passing down interesting information but spiritual formation as well.The book has its share of stories. JEP shares some of his own experiences, and most of the chapters have a blurb by someone else who learned something in teaching cross-culturally. The stories illustrate JEP’s points and add a friendly tone to the book. JEP also brings into the discussion educational theorists, such as Dewey and Piaget. Great book! I'm from Seattle and I think it's so adorable. It's rather small in size and the recipes are delicious!
Having been to Pike Place Public Market and a huge fan of Pacific Northwest seafood, this was a no-brainer. The recipes are organized in sections. The first describes a history of the market. The next section is about fin fish, then shell fish, and then the odd kettle section talks about tuna, squid, and seafood combination dishes, to name a few. The recipes are easy to follow and the results are worth the effort and turn out extremely well. I bought this book along with Ray's Boathouse: Seafood Secrets of the Pacific Northwest and Pure Flavor: 125 Fresh All-American Recipes from the Pacific Northwest. So when all three arrived, I was in my glory--three Pacific Northwest cookbooks to complement my Wildwood Wildwood: Cooking from the Source in the Pacific Northwest cookbook. I did a tasting and made seven of the recipes the weekend after receiving the books. Everything was great, and I felt like I was in the Pacific Northwest again -- not in Jersey...well...

I have high blood pressure. Dash diet is a good diet for people like me. It is good that with the help of nutrition I can affect my state of health. This book is beautiful. Have great ideas! I can also say that the instructions are simple and the photos look amazing.
Useful dash diet, with a predominance of vegetables, fruits, grains and dietary meats. The balanced composition of the dishes fits my healthy lifestyle. Appetizing illustrations. Simple and at the same time delicious recipes. With this diet you can improve the work of the cardiovascular system. A seven-day meal plan helps you to feel the positive results of such a diet.
The recipes seem very creative but the fat content is way too high for the DASH diet. Most of the salads make 2 servings and have 2 tablespoons of olive oil. That's 3 teaspoons of olive oil per serving, basically your entire fat allotment for the day. A lot of the main dish recipes are similar. There's also quite a few beef recipes, and anyone familiar with the DASH diet knows beef consumption is discouraged. Likewise, many recipes call for "sour cream" or "milk," without specifying low fat or no fat versions. I don't think these recipes were developed by someone with a very strong familiarity with the DASH diet, thus they lose credibility with me. But the book was free so I guess I can't really expect much.

This diet is trustworthy, real and doesn’t require drastic changes. High blood pressure affects one in three American adults and often has no warning signs. The thing is an inch and a half thick--definitely not pocket-sized. It's satchel-sized. It's put-it-under-the-tire-to-keep-the-trailer-from-rolling-downhill-sized. Form factors aside, Bigelow's book lives up to its title; it's all troubleshooting information. Wonderful! This book assuredly was not meant to be read front to back. It works like this: start with a problem, and then look up the solution. Bigelow divided the book into sections for various parts of the PC or devices that are connected to it. You look up the device, read about it, heed some general maintenance wisdom, and then peruse the various "symptoms" and cures. Very nice, and just about the best information on troubleshooting that I've seen. There are two problems. The first (again) is the book's size. Simply put, it's not a pocket-sized book. Osborne should forget that aspect, and publish the book in a size that easily lies flat. Trust me, the information is valuable enough to sell the book; don't get cute with the size. The second is that I'd like to see the symptoms summarized before they're presented. That would make finding specific information easier, and I wouldn't have to thumb through several dozen symptoms/solutions before finding what I want. On the key subject of disk partitioning, this book fits the bill--but only in troubleshooting partitioning problems. On that subject, Bigelow does a fine job, and even suggests third-party solutions. In fact, the book does contain many third-party solutions, as well as advice on what to do in Windows for troubleshooting. This book is not for everyone. Most of the introduction is aimed at computer technicians or troubleshooting professionals. But at $19.99 it's a good investment. OK, so I guess I was supposed to know it was only for older operating systems/computers. Maybe the technology can be somewhat related to current systems. Make sure you are buying the latest versions that cover your OS. I ended up buying the "purple" one later and it does cover xp, vista. This is only a good deal if you are still working on the 9x systems. Spend more to get more.
Still using it great reference thanks
I purchased this book because of the several glowing reviews of it on Amazon. Now that I have a copy (which I will be returning shortly) I can only guess that those reviews were written by friends of the author. This book is little more but a long and rambling antidotal collection of PC repair stories roughly organized into general failing areas. No symptom analysis, no error code explanations, no organized flowcharts of logical procedures, no tables of settings and types. Just paragraph after paragraph of "if you notice this, try that". In my mind this should be called something like the "Jeff Foxworthy you might be a redneck PC repair tech manual". However, if you are new to PC repair and have no idea where to start looking for the resolution of a problem, this MIGHT be just the book you need - because you can sit and thumb through it and look like you are doing something useful while you await the arrival of the guy who knows what he's doing. You might even stumble on an antidote that actually applies to the problem you are currently experiencing.
My book arrived on time. It is just as described.
Out of date was meant for windows xp
This is a great book on the subject. It is very thorough and detailed. Definitely deserves to be in every tech's briefcase. My one caveat being that this is *not* a "pocket" reference, at roughly 640 pages it is a solid "briefcase" reference though and definitely worth taking a look at if you work on PCs.
A bit outdated but there is still good information in it.
