"The diverse writings presented here will prove to be invaluable not only to students and scholars, but to readers with a curiosity about the historical and cultural legacy of African women. . . . The editors of this book sought to provide a more complete and robust portrait of Africa and African women. They have . . . recover[ed] the lost voices of African women and, as a consequence, have restored their rich cultural and historic legacies." ―Foreword Reviews"Some of these texts are full of celebration and some of powerful emotions; all evoke powerful imagery. for those who are interested in African Literature and culture, this 4 volumes anthology gives a broad overview and a good selection of various important writers chronologically ! I recommend it for researchers, students and African lit. fans !
Opening this substantial volume - the second of four in the series " Women Writing Africa", a project conceived in 1990 by members of the Modern Language Association, the reader immediately realizes that this is not a book to read from page 1 to the end. Instead, browsing, picking up and getting absorbed in a story or a poem, is the most likely reaction. It is a companion book for any interested reader curious or knowledgeable about West African writing. Its great value lies in this being a very rare, rich reference collection of West African women's writing, going back to the eighteen hundreds and covering any form of writing, from poetry and songs to letters to stories. It took years to bring the material together and the editors and many contributors deserve praise for having achieved this rich compilation of thought, experience and - in short - glimpses into life, of a great diversity of peoples and cultures. The book's index is very well structured and easy to use, first by broad time-lines and within those, by themes. The themes cover the domestic life from rituals to love songs to lullabies, the various work situations for women, political issues with the rise of nationalism in countries to "Negotiating New Social Identities" and more. A comprehensive list of sources and bibliographic references assists those who want to pursue one or the other author's writing or theme in substantive ways.In their highly informative preface the editors place the collection into the wider historical and cultural contexts and address the question a reader might have, why concentrating on "women writing"? They also stress that the selection was difficult, given "the intense richness and complexity of the West African Region... a mosaic of ethnic groups, languages, cultures, histories, and countries". Twelve "nations" were eventually chosen to be featured by their writers, poets and thinkers: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Conakry, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone. Especially helpful are theme-focused introductions, especially relating to more historical themes that add to the understanding of meaning and context. For example, the brief poem "Bamako" - then the capital cit of French Sudan and now of Mali, expresses the wailing of the women as their lovers depart for Bamako; for them the "city was close to hell":Bamako!I do not bemoan my mother.I do not bemoan my father.I bemoan my lover who has no clothesTo go to BamakoAnd that is tough![Friederike Knabe]

“If you, with your special facilities and training, do not manage to do this, it is not particularly likely that anyone else will do it." With this, Evelyn Underhill challenges us to invest deeply in our own spiritual lives, for our sake and for the sake of the people to whom we minister. She writes extensively on how prayer shapes ministers, different types of prayer and how this life of prayer overflows into the work of ministry. Though Concerning the Inner Life was written in 1926, Underhill’s insights remain deeply relevant to the complex work of spiritual direction.
Fabulous book
Excellent teaching for clergy and serious students of God.
Found this to be an enlightening book. The essays were helpful for my course study in the Spiritual Life of the Minister.
GREAT SELLER...BOOK JUST AS WAS DESCRIBED..
These three informal talks were given by Evelyn Underhill to an unspecified school for clergy in the North of England. It was published in 1926 at the request of some who heard the talks. The talks are (1) The heart of personal religion (2) The goals of inner life and (3) Contemplative and creative life. The author believes that the first duty of the parish priest is not social work but to be "real men of prayer." She offers encouragement and inspiration by quoting western Christian mystics in the practice of the interior life. The English is beautiful and the talks must be read in their entirety to receive the author's nuanced message. Can be read over and over again because it is written with style and grace.

If you’re anything at all like me, then please get yourself checked. Afterwards, you may want to look into this fun book which is exactly what it claims to be: a compendium of TV movies from the 1960’s to 1999. The book first approaches the movies by general genres before offering a long list of, and review of, individual films. Though there were films created in many genres, the thriller (be it horror or mystery or the fantastic) seemed one of the most popular and therefore many of the films listed lean this way. Among the greats, such as Steven Speilberg’s seminal Duel or the stunning Trilogy of Terror get their due along with other (many other) more forgotten works, some of which deserve rediscovery, if only for the “I can’t believe s/he’s in a film like this†cast.Highly recommended even if all you’re looking for is a blast from the nostalgic past.
Edited, and partially written, by the amazing Amanda Reyes, ARE YOU IN THE HOUSE ALONE? is an essential and thorough look at the television films seventies, eighties and nineties. Including chapters and reviews by a long list of accomplished and acclaimed writers, ARE YOU IN THE HOUSE ALONE? is one of the definitive works on this sadly often overlooked chapter in film history. Illustrated with hundreds of rare photos and ads, this book will prove a constant reference point for fans and scholars. ARE YOU IN THE HOUSE ALONE? is an exceptional work that will hopefully lead to the long-overdue release of so many of these films on DVD and Blu-ray.
This is a fun, insightful and, for the most part, enthusiastic compendium of TV Movies (mostly horror and thrillers found here). I've discovered some really wonderful movies through this book and am forever grateful to Amanda Reyes for putting it together. My only issue is that most of the other reviewers in the book do not share Reyes' enthusiasm for the TV-Movie format, and quite a few of the reviews come across as dismissive, and approach the content with a suspicion and a superiority that feels unnecessary and curmudgeonly. The charms of a movie like Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell go unmentioned and instead we're warned of a "tubby script" and a need for patience. Still, this is a great reference book, and with many of the films available to watch on Youtube, it's a wonderful resource for fans of horror movies looking for something a little different and a lot wonderful.
This is a fun, fabulous reference book for anybody who loves TV movies, genre movies, or the '70s and '80s. All of the essays are well researched and insightful, and the blurbs are dense with excellent info (moreso than in most movie encyclopedias). The writers are the best of the best IMO. TV movie history has long been sort of invisible, so this book fills a big void. I loved reading about the movies I've seen, and learning about ones that I haven't.
Made for TV movies have generally received a bad reputation over the years as being cheap and subpar to theatrical films. However as this book helps to prove there are a treasure trove of honestly great classic TV movies to be sought after online and on DVD etc.Edited by Amanda Reyes who is shedding some light on the fact these movies are becoming long forgotten and hopefully fans of TV movies can help spread the word of rediscoving or possibly discovering them again from the very first time.Featuring Amanda's own reviews and reviews from many others this book is the perfect way to compile great lists for TV movie get togethers or possibly a rainy day binge fest! You may end up seeking out movies featuring Harrison Ford as a Biology Teacher that aired in May of 1977! A Wes Craven classic about a satanic Susan Lucci offering the best of the 80's material world for Robert Urich's family. Lynda Carter volunteering on a helpline that leads to suspense! Or a battle of family friendly tv show icons like Melissa Sue Anderson of Little House on the Praire and Mary Beth McDonough of The Waltons in a showdown of high school witchery. You'll discover so many other great films! The book is a must for tv film lovers or even just those finding out about such movies! Seek out Amanda Reyes and her other TV movie loving companions Daniel R Budnick and Nathan Johnson on her Made for TV Movie Podcast for more great TV Movie Discoveries and fun trivia!
AYITHA? is a rare gift for fans of both made-for-TV movies and thoughtful film criticism. It's funny, smart, insightful, well-researched, and more fun than a barrel of Zuni fetish dolls. Kudos to Amanda Reyes and company. I can't wait to see what they come up with next.
As a kid of the 80s, I grew up on TV and TV movies. This book has been a fun trip down memory lane not just for TV movies I have seen, but the movies I remember seeing commercials for but wasn't able to see! It's well researched and has some interesting critical thinking about trends and how TV movies fed into fears and dreams of the zeitgeist. Added to that, Death of Ritchie gets a mention? I'm sold.
TV Movies finally get their due through the awesome Made-For-TV-Mayhem hostess, Amanda Reyes! Love her informative blog and FB page, so this book is no exception. I'm nostalgic for the TV movies I remember, and those from the 70's and early 80's that would repeat on late-night TV. There's so many little gems in here.

An engrossing, insider’s account of how a teacher built one of the world’s most valuable companies—rivaling Walmart and Amazon—and forever reshaped the global economyIn just a decade and a half, Jack Ma, a man from modest beginnings who started out as an English teacher, founded Alibaba and built it into one of the world’s largest companies, an e-commerce empire on which hundreds of millions of Chinese consumers depend. In 2014, Alibaba’s $25 billion IPO was the largest global IPO in history. A Rockefeller of his time, who is courted by CEOs and presidents around the world, Jack is an icon for China’s booming private sector and the gatekeeper to hundreds of millions of middle-class consumers. Duncan Clark first met Jack in 1999 in the small apartment where Jack founded Alibaba. Granted unprecedented access to a wealth of new material, including exclusive interviews, Clark draws on his own experience as an early adviser to Alibaba as well as his two decades in China chronicling the Internet’s impact on the country to create an authoritative, compelling narrative account of Alibaba’s rise. How did Jack overcome his humble origins and early failures to achieve massive success with Alibaba? How did he outsmart rival entrepreneurs from both China and Silicon Valley? Can Alibaba maintain its 80 percent market share? As it forges ahead into finance and entertainment, are there limits to Alibaba’s ambitions? How does the Chinese government view its rise? I bought this book looking for an objective biography on Jack Ma. Instead, this book is nothing but page after page of the author on his knees, praising Jack Ma as a God among men. I couldn't get more than 3 chapters through it, and am now looking for an alternative biography.
After reading this book, I cut Jack 's picture and glued to my office calendar. We have mostly high tech people make big in the bay area, Jack is using his people skill to beat the tech entrepreneurs, he took away the excuses from literature major seem to not disfavored in our tech oriented economy..
An interesting read for a non-techie. Jack Mah's perseverance in trying various enterprises in China without the benefit of the internet is well described. The description of the volatily of the .com start- ups was hair-raising for the uninitiated. The convergence of sheer luck, keeping your powder dry and recognition of opportunities in addition to hard work made Jack so successful. He proved that western companies have a lot to learn about the Chinese business climate.Written in a way that was understandable for for the low-tech reader.
An absorbing, well-written tome about the history of Alibaba (China's Amazon) and the world of e-commerce/finance in China today. Topics covered include background on the life and education of Alibaba's most famous co-founder, Jack Ma, and how he began as an entrepreneur. The author actually interviewed Mr. Ma and his colleagues for this book.
I wanted to learn more about Alibaba, and this gave great insight. It was an enjoyable listen, all the way through. I am much more impressed with the integrity of the company now that I have been through this book.
I started my journey 12 years ago in China when I landed in Hangzhou and remained their for 2 years before moving onto Shanghai, where I am now basedI took tour groups to Alibaba HQ from almost the first year and heard all the great stories. For me, this book is important as it helps me tie those great stories together and reconfirms once and for all what a visionary Jack Ma is.
Duncan Clark presents a readable and often gripping account of the rise of Alibaba, one of China's iconic firms and an aspiring global giant. It illuminates all the contradictions and opportunities of the new China, from tensions between government ministries and firms like Alibaba which are pushing into areas such as finance and media once dominated by government, to the fierce competition between e-commerce and media giants within China that will help shape the country's future and its further engagement with the world. Should be required reading for anyone interested in understanding China and its global trajectory.....
Was an okay read that was interesting at times, but not a real page turner for me. I was intrigued on how Jack went about growing Alibaba, but there seemed be a lot going on at one time and it seemed be hard to read at times.

About the Author
Helen Adams Keller was born in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, the elder daughter of Arthur Henley Keller and Kate Adams Keller. When but a toddler at 19 months of age, she fell ill with what could have been scarlet fever or meningitis and shortly after, lost her sight and hearing. The impact this had on a child barely two years old is difficult to imagine as communication was all but lost to her. At seven years of age, with the help of Anne Sullivan, the teacher from the Perkins Institute for the Blind who was to transform her life, Helen learnt to communicate with those around her. Anne Sullivan, herself visually impaired, opened up the world to Helen, first by fingerspelling words into her hand, then by teaching her to lip read by placing one hand lightly over the speaker's lips. Helen went on to learn to speak, to read braille and to interpret sign language with her hands - and even discovered she could enjoy music by feeling the rhythmic vibrations of the beat. From her early isolating years of silence and darkness, Helen Keller emerged as a world-famous speaker and author of twelve published books and several articles. She was the first deaf-blind person to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree and was subsequently awarded many honorary degrees. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson conferred on her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the USA's highest civilian honours.  A stalwart campaigner for women's suffrage, birth control, socialism, labour rights and pacifism, she also promoted and helped establish institutions for the deaf and blind. The first (silent) film made about her in 1919 was called Deliverance and this was followed by many other movies and television serials. Keller was well travelled, both within the USA and around the world, meeting US presidents, other national leaders, famous actors and writers and people involved in the work she championed. The inventor and scientist, Alexander Graham Bell, whose work in acoustics and elocution underpinned his endeavours with the deaf, was a lifelong friend and co-advocate. The Story of My Life is dedicated to him. Helen Keller's autobiography chronicles her life from a child to a young woman of twenty-two years.

In 1948, a young white English woman, Ruth Williams, made headline news all over the world. For she had met, fallen in love with and married Seretse Khama, an African prince and heir to the chieftainship of a tribe of more than 100,000 people - the Bamangwato. At first, the marriage was no more welcome in Africa than in government circles in Whitehall. Within a year of their wedding, the young couple had provoked an astonishing series of events that have never been explained. The British government was determined to prevent Seretse taking his rightful place at the head of his tribe. The Bamangwato, to their credit, accepted the marriage and welcomed Ruth as their queen. Attlee's Labour government embarked on what appeared to be a vendetta against them, robbing Seretse of his birthright and his people of their chief. In the process, Seretse and Ruth were forcibly separated while she awaited the birth of their first child. Now having access to Ministerial telegrams and Cabinet documents, the author tells the full story.

I read this book after being deeply moved by the movie, A UNITED KINGDOM, about the same subject, the government furor and persecution of African chief-to-be Seretse Khama and Ruth Williams, the white Englishwoman who became his wife. The movie was dramatic, infuriating, and inspiring, but the true history of this couple's devoted love and dedication to Seretse's people - meticulously researched and documented, and intelligently described in this book - is even MORE so. It demonstrates the depths of evil politicians will sink to, running roughshod over human decency, truth, and justice, in order to preserve their positions of power, even when they must contradict themselves and subvert the values they claim they're upholding. The book also serves as a cautionary tale for our times, because it's clear throughout the narrative that an ultimately triumphant outcome was only made possible by a competitive press and an informed, engaged, sympathetic British populace who made their outrage felt despite massive attempts to deceive them, so the politicians had to pay attention. In the current world of virtually-monopolistic, corporate-controlled media and largely politically-naive and uninvolved citizens, it's questionable whether even people with the strength of character, enduring love, personal integrity, and dedication to doing what they believed best for their people that Seretse and Ruth possessed, would stand a chance of achieving a just outcome.A gripping true story, told with keen insight, articulate language, and unusual objectivity and fairness to all parties, even while clearly sympathetic to Ruth and Seretse throughout their ordeal. A satisfying read. I liked it better than the movie, but I'm grateful for the movie, because without it, I'd never have even known these people or their story. Ultimately, despite all the prejudices and cold-hearted political machinations of countries bent on preserving domination, the story of Ruth and Seretse Khama shows the power of love to change the course of history.
After watching the movie A United Kingdom, I found this book a lot more thrilling, fascinating and eye opening. It certainly left me with the impression that the author describes what really happened. Of course, the movie could not possibly unfold the complexities of the political dilemma in which the British found themselves in after WW II (and thus rather cheaply depicted them as arrogant heartless somewhat stupid pricks). The author convincingly shows that the British were trying to follow a realpolitik strategy, which in the end they could only lose. The British were in essence blackmailed by South Africa during a time they needed access to the country's gold and uranium, to help pay back the debts accumulated during WW II and to keep up with the nuclear arms race that had just started. The author also provides a succinct summary of the sub regional African history, making the actions of Seretse Khama's local antagonists much clearer and more understandable. What I also liked a lot about the book was that Ruth William appeared to be a much more complex and much stronger personality than in the movie. While it would probably have been beyond the scope of the story, I would still have wanted to read why Seretse Khama decided after all the denigrating mistreatments by the British to stay in the Western camp, instead of following most other frontline states, making Botswana non-aligned or associating with the Eastern block during the cold war.
I loved the book. I was mesmerized by the intertwining of this great love story and the politics of British rule, anti colonial struggle and the genuine love the couple showed for their people. The details on the personalities and their interactions was definitely a central part of the book. The imagery was fantastic and drew me into the scenes almost like I was there in the middle of the emotional and political roller coster. Although I had read a lot about southern African struggles for independence this story was new to me - what a wonderful surprise. Great book of love and history
Such an important centerpiece of World History! Africa mirrors the feelings of bigotry from people worldwide who fight to spread ignorance through domination, yet ultimately lose the battle. The story of a courageous couple, one black and one white, overcame oppression from white bigotry to become a central symbol for Africa's positive future.
This is a very good read about the machinations the British were willing to do in order to gain and hold hegemony in South Africa and the rest of tribal Africa. The film, called United Nation does not tell the complete story, which is not unusual for films, but they really left out lots of significant geopolitical information that Michael Dutfield included. The film is about romance and the book is about the development of nuclear weapons and uranium discovery and mining. The persecution of the couple came about because of the desire of the United States Military to commit massive genocide.
Books shipped from England, and arrived much faster than I thought it would. I know, very well, the story of Seretse and Ruth Khama, but wanted to learn more details about their lives together. I haven't finished it yet, but so far it's a very lovely (and often teary) read. I grew up in a very open-minded family, and I could never wrap my brain around the concept of some people feeling they have a right to tell other people who they can love/marry. The book is well written, and unfortunately, my research revealed that the accomplished author, Micheal Dutfield died in a motorcycle accident in 1995. Dutfield also produced a movie of the same title in 1990 (would love to get my hands on a copy of that). Seretse and Ruth's eldest son is currently the president of Botswana, and the Paramount Chief of the nation's Bamangwato people.
I could not believe the injustice Ruth and Seretse Khama suffered because of a mixed marriage. In the end the two were the victors in other ways. The two of them went on to achieve many good programs and successes in Botswana.

This book demonstrates a high level but very useful mathematical approach towards Identity & Access Management (IAM). Starting with the generalization of concepts of users, authentication and authorization and expressing these basic IAM functions as multiplication of matrices, the author in subsequent chapters extends this approach to the role-based access control, risk and trust. Although not very useful for the practical implementation of IAM systems, this books provides a level of generalization of IAM entities, processes and problems that enable IAM discussions in mathematical terms.
I was looking for a book on IAM that is not focused on a particular set of products and/or implementations, since I just wanted something as a reference for the IAM model in general. This book turned out to be the best choice for this. It explains the fundamentals and mathematical principals of IAM in a very concise way and therefore delivers timeless answers to the fundamentals of IAM. In addition the author provides some useful examples for the underlying theory of IAM. While I had to brush up on my high school math for some parts of the book I don't think it should be a deterrent for anyone that wants a clear and concise introduction into IAM.I bought the Kindle version of this book and the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is the formatting of the Kindle version. Some of the mathematical formulas are not correctly rendered on the Kindle. For example: Matrices are not displayed correctly with a proper bracket to the left and right, but rather you see some special characters displayed. In addition on some formulas the indices appear too small to read on the Kindle/iPad Kindle app. Labels on the diagrams in this version of the book are also too small. It would be great if the next, revised edition could have an option of zooming into the diagrams. Once these nuisances are fixed I would no doubt give this book five stars.
It is a fake book. Doesn't buy it.
