Author Steve Cavanagh has a real talent when ending each chapter, a hook that makes you want to go on to the next chapter. The many characters are compelling and fascinating. Attorney Eddie Flynn is trying his best to defend his client, billionaire David Child, while his own wife and daughter are in jeopardy. It certainly appears that Child is guilty of murder but Flynn is convinced of his innocence. Then we have District Attorney Zader (don’t call him Darth) who only wants a conviction so that he can run for a higher political office. Flynn has a sidekick known as The Lizard who refers to himself in the third person. Then we have an FBI agent named Dell who has some distinctly unconventional ideas about achieving justice. There’s also a huge amount of money at stake. Child has developed a computer algorithm that moves cash around the world at lightning speeds, a “laundering program†done for his parent company, and they have no interest at all in Child’s acquittal. The plot moves steadily with lots of surprises along the way. To make the reading experience more enjoyable, there are plenty of scenes with snappy legal dialogue that bring unexpected levity to an otherwise serious business. All things considered this is one of the best legal thrillers I’ve read in quite a long time.

It was a familiar one. It’s a game the justice system plays every single day in America--because sometimes it simply doesn’t matter if you’re really innocent of the crime; the only smart move is to plead guilty and make a deal for a lesser sentence. “You want me to read the new evidence and tell David that irrespective of his innocence, he will definitely be convicted and his only choice is to plead guilty and make a deal to cut his sentence.†“Bingo,†said Dell. Happens all the time. I’ve done it myself. Innocent people often don’t want to take the chance of losing and doing fifteen or twenty years when they could make a deal and be out in two. It’s mathematics--not justice, but that's the reality.Don't worry -- this book is not a diatribe about the shortcomings of the American judicial system (as appropriate as one might be), little comments like that are just a little bit of flavoring accenting the story, grounding it in the real world despite the craziness filling the book.Eddie Flynn, for those new to the character, is a con man who went straight and then went to Law School. Following that, he made a couple big mistakes -- one cost him the career he had built, the other cost him his family. He's in the process of rebuilding both -- no easy task -- but you have to root for the guy trying to recover.Eddie's approached (okay, ambushed) by the FBI, who wants Eddie to take on a new client, David Child. Child's a tech billionaire accused of murdering his girlfriend, and the FBI wants Eddie to convince him to plead to the charges. Then he needs to convince Eddie to help the FBI take down the law firm that currently represents him -- and is laundering money on a mind-boggling scale. If Eddie refuses? The FBI has enough evidence to put Eddie's ex away for a long time (did I mention that she works for the aforementioned firm, totally unaware that she's incriminated in the laundering?).So, somehow Eddie has to separate Child from his current counsel, replace them, and then persuade Child to work with the FBI -- within a couple of days. No easy task. Then Eddie becomes convinced that Child is innocent. Which complicates things tremendously. So how does Eddie clear Child, keep his wife out of jail and help the FBI take down the laundering lawyers? Well, it'll take every bit of his old tricks, and maybe a few new ones.I'm not a huge legal thriller guy -- never read a Grisham -- but when you give me a compelling character (particularly a defense attorney) like Eddie Flynn, I'm in. Watching Eddie navigate through the tricky waters of the system -- including jail guards, court staff, judges, prosecutors -- is a blast. This was like a serious version of the Andy Carpenter books. I would like to see Eddie take on a client he because he wanted to for a change, but that's not a complaint about this book, it'd just be nice to see.Sure, it's your appreciation for Eddie Flynn that'll determine if you like this book or not, but he's not the only character to focus on -- there's David Child himself, who is interestingly drawn -- he's a fairly typical computer-genius character, socially awkward, etc. Typical, yes, but used well. My only complaint about Child's associate, Holly, is that we didn't get more of her (not that Cavanagh could've easily fit more of her in). The villains? Nasty, vile people -- believable (with one possible exception, but I liked him enough I don't care) -- all of them were well used, well drawn and just what the doctor ordered.The Plea isn't perfect: I figured out the whodunit almost instantly, but it took a little while to get the details of the howdunit right -- and Cavanagh fooled me a little bit on that one. But that didn't detract from the book at all -- the fun is in watching Eddie and the rest scramble to survive this horrible situation and figure things out. The plot moves at a relentless pace -- which is a cliché, I realize, but I challenge you to come up with another way to describe this plot. Eddie can barely get a moment to rest and think, and when you're reading this, you feel like you can't either.Characters you can't help but root for (or, in some cases, against), a fast-moving plot, with just enough twists, turns and hurdles. This one'll grab you by the collar and drag you along as it rushes to the dramatic conclusion (not that you'll be fighting against it, but the dragging will help you keep up). Keep yours eyes peeled for Steve Cavanagh and Eddie Flynn, they're something to watch.
I really enjoyed this book. Maybe the plot is a bit over the top, but no more so than a great many similar books I have read that do not have the courtroom drama that this book contains. I recommend this book if you enjoy vivid courtroom action and a very interesting plot.
I love this character Eddie Flynn. If I ever needed a lawyer (God forbid) Eddie is my choice. A lawyer who admits he's a con man right up front. Precious! The supporting characters are well done and easy to visualize without a lot of tedious explanation. One of my favorites was The Lizard. This is the kind of friend that you need when things are going into the dump. I also enjoyed Eddie's humor.I hope this author is already working on bringing Eddie out of retirement. I am looking forward to the next "hopeless" situation that only a con man can get out of.
I agree with other reviewers that this was a page turner and that I kept reading into the early morning until I finished the book. I loved the courtroom drama, which I thought was the best part of the book. The banter back and forth was excellent. Plenty of suspense and twisty plots. Looking forward to the next in the series if there is one.
WOW. Eddie is an interesting con man who puts his experience to work as a lawyer and defense attorney. He believes in his ability to see the truth and discern who are the good guys and who are the bad ones. He has the ability to look at the details, to free his client and expose corruption in high places. It was a great read! I hope to read more by Steve Cavanagh.
Another excellent, spellbinding book. I didn’t want to put it down. There were a few editorial mistakes like someone working for CBS 60 Minutes on one page and CNN a few pages later, but they didn’t detract from the story. I’m a huge fan of Eddie Flynn and Steve Cavanaugh’s writing!
This was the third book I read by Steve Cavanagh. All 3 were very enjoyable. The author is an attorney in Ireland who writes about characters involved in cases in NYC criminal court as if that was where he practiced. The style flows and I give it an A

This book demonstrates a high level but very useful mathematical approach towards Identity & Access Management (IAM). Starting with the generalization of concepts of users, authentication and authorization and expressing these basic IAM functions as multiplication of matrices, the author in subsequent chapters extends this approach to the role-based access control, risk and trust. Although not very useful for the practical implementation of IAM systems, this books provides a level of generalization of IAM entities, processes and problems that enable IAM discussions in mathematical terms.
I was looking for a book on IAM that is not focused on a particular set of products and/or implementations, since I just wanted something as a reference for the IAM model in general. This book turned out to be the best choice for this. It explains the fundamentals and mathematical principals of IAM in a very concise way and therefore delivers timeless answers to the fundamentals of IAM. In addition the author provides some useful examples for the underlying theory of IAM. While I had to brush up on my high school math for some parts of the book I don't think it should be a deterrent for anyone that wants a clear and concise introduction into IAM.I bought the Kindle version of this book and the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is the formatting of the Kindle version. Some of the mathematical formulas are not correctly rendered on the Kindle. For example: Matrices are not displayed correctly with a proper bracket to the left and right, but rather you see some special characters displayed. In addition on some formulas the indices appear too small to read on the Kindle/iPad Kindle app. Labels on the diagrams in this version of the book are also too small. It would be great if the next, revised edition could have an option of zooming into the diagrams. Once these nuisances are fixed I would no doubt give this book five stars.

Opening this substantial volume - the second of four in the series " Women Writing Africa", a project conceived in 1990 by members of the Modern Language Association, the reader immediately realizes that this is not a book to read from page 1 to the end. Instead, browsing, picking up and getting absorbed in a story or a poem, is the most likely reaction. It is a companion book for any interested reader curious or knowledgeable about West African writing. Its great value lies in this being a very rare, rich reference collection of West African women's writing, going back to the eighteen hundreds and covering any form of writing, from poetry and songs to letters to stories. It took years to bring the material together and the editors and many contributors deserve praise for having achieved this rich compilation of thought, experience and - in short - glimpses into life, of a great diversity of peoples and cultures. The book's index is very well structured and easy to use, first by broad time-lines and within those, by themes. The themes cover the domestic life from rituals to love songs to lullabies, the various work situations for women, political issues with the rise of nationalism in countries to "Negotiating New Social Identities" and more. A comprehensive list of sources and bibliographic references assists those who want to pursue one or the other author's writing or theme in substantive ways.In their highly informative preface the editors place the collection into the wider historical and cultural contexts and address the question a reader might have, why concentrating on "women writing"? They also stress that the selection was difficult, given "the intense richness and complexity of the West African Region... a mosaic of ethnic groups, languages, cultures, histories, and countries". Twelve "nations" were eventually chosen to be featured by their writers, poets and thinkers: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Conakry, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone. Especially helpful are theme-focused introductions, especially relating to more historical themes that add to the understanding of meaning and context. These three informal talks were given by Evelyn Underhill to an unspecified school for clergy in the North of England. It was published in 1926 at the request of some who heard the talks. The talks are (1) The heart of personal religion (2) The goals of inner life and (3) Contemplative and creative life. The author believes that the first duty of the parish priest is not social work but to be "real men of prayer." She offers encouragement and inspiration by quoting western Christian mystics in the practice of the interior life. The English is beautiful and the talks must be read in their entirety to receive the author's nuanced message. Can be read over and over again because it is written with style and grace.

If you’re anything at all like me, then please get yourself checked. Illustrated with hundreds of rare photos and ads, this book will prove a constant reference point for fans and scholars. ARE YOU IN THE HOUSE ALONE? is an exceptional work that will hopefully lead to the long-overdue release of so many of these films on DVD and Blu-ray.
This is a fun, insightful and, for the most part, enthusiastic compendium of TV Movies (mostly horror and thrillers found here). I've discovered some really wonderful movies through this book and am forever grateful to Amanda Reyes for putting it together. My only issue is that most of the other reviewers in the book do not share Reyes' enthusiasm for the TV-Movie format, and quite a few of the reviews come across as dismissive, and approach the content with a suspicion and a superiority that feels unnecessary and curmudgeonly. The charms of a movie like Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell go unmentioned and instead we're warned of a "tubby script" and a need for patience. Still, this is a great reference book, and with many of the films available to watch on Youtube, it's a wonderful resource for fans of horror movies looking for something a little different and a lot wonderful.
This is a fun, fabulous reference book for anybody who loves TV movies, genre movies, or the '70s and '80s. All of the essays are well researched and insightful, and the blurbs are dense with excellent info (moreso than in most movie encyclopedias). The writers are the best of the best IMO. TV movie history has long been sort of invisible, so this book fills a big void. I loved reading about the movies I've seen, and learning about ones that I haven't.

As a kid of the 80s, I grew up on TV and TV movies. This book has been a fun trip down memory lane not just for TV movies I have seen, but the movies I remember seeing commercials for but wasn't able to see! It's well researched and has some interesting critical thinking about trends and how TV movies fed into fears and dreams of the zeitgeist. Added to that, Death of Ritchie gets a mention? I'm sold.
TV Movies finally get their due through the awesome Made-For-TV-Mayhem hostess, Amanda Reyes! Love her informative blog and FB page, so this book is no exception. Having no reference to go off is just makes it harder and searching online can accidentally being up some rather awkward results.The art style isn't my favorite, but it's a good reference guide (and about two bucks) so decided to go for it.I will surely be recommending it to any students searching for a simply explained How-to-draw guide. :)It came in good shape with only some ware (as it was described) and within a week of ordering. The drawings and tutorials are nice, and I like how the book focuses on the basics of shoujo anatomy and style. But there honestly isn't much covering romance scenes, to my disappointment, which is kind of misleading considering the book title is "Mangamania Romance." But because the book is helpful in other areas, I still give it 4 stars.
At first glance, I was a little wary. It was from Christopher Hart, who I know has quite a reputation for being a little sexist. But I thought this would be a great book for tutorials on how to show a romantic scene with two people, but it was mostly just how to draw super-skinny white girls or body builder boys without a partner. It was good for improving perspective drawing and special effects, but other than that, it is not that great of a drawing book.
I loved this book. I have never seen a book that gave even paneling advice for my own comics. I'm not an honest fan of the manga mania series finding the bigger books more focused on advanced technique as if "expecting" you to know the basics. This book gives both basic, moderate, AND advanced technique using realistic body movement and posture. I feel like I can draw anything now lol.
I have been using this book since the eighth grade for references in more work and I love it for wholly encompassing everything you need to know about anime-style drawing. I like the easy to follow instructions and reference pictures and the in-depth descriptions of, not just how to draw, but how to draw well with expressions, appearances, and even creating the panels for your own comics. Christopher Hart is a wonderful artist, and I would recommend most of the books from the "MangaMania" series!
Does not contain a single kissing scene to draw...but it has quite a bit of everything else....if you have trouble drawing a picture of characters interacting-like hugging or argueing-this is for you. Remember practice makes perfect-and please don't use linned paper...this book teaches proportions-and linned paper distorts it all.
This the second book that I purchased for my daughter, along with the Manga Chibis book and she just loves them. I have noticed her drawing efforts and results are very good. As I mentioned in my other review of these books, she didn't wait for Christmas and immediatley opened them and started drawing with a big silly grin on her face. Needless to say, I have noted a big improvement in her efforts at drawing and she tells me that the instructions and method are very easy and I can tell because she proudly displays her results and can obviously see that she indeed draws and enjoys drawing even more than she did before. And I am very happy that she is very happy.
